my first expansion

By phm24, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'm thinking about getting my first expansion. Do you have suggestions?

I'll try to save you some reading. Regarding big box expansions, the general consensus is:

Dunwich first. New, somewhat interesting board with unstable locations. Dunwich Horror can be fun. It introduces the indispensable Injury and Madness decks and fills out your Spells and other items. Plus new Ancient Ones, Investigators, etc.

The majority would love to suggest Innsmouth first, but it lacks additional Investigator cards (items, Allies, etc) and hence isn't the ideal expansion to grab first if all you have on the table is base Arkham ... but otherwise, it is arguably the best of the three big boxes. It's a no-brainer to pick up second.

Kingsport last. Some will say not at all, but regardless of whether or not you use the board (no stable locations, hence boring, plus the rift mechanic is more a time sink than anything), the Epic Battle decks are great and it introduces a slew of new Investigators, AOs, Heralds, Guardians and cards.

The small box card-only expansions are all well and good, and will definitely add to your game (especially theme), but grabbing a big box first to expand the board is the best first step (in my opinion), especially if you're looking to increase the difficulty of the game. Plus, because they all focus on the Arkham board and ignore the expansion towns, the small boxes tend to introduce deck dilution moreso than the big boxes. With all six expansions in the mix (including everything from the small boxes), the Mythos and Gate decks tend to become Arkham-centric without some homebrew deck management.

dunwich, insmouth kingsport big boxes or some small ones to save cash and just add cards and a small board, king in yellow first i think happy.gif

Thank you. I read the October thread.

What are you going to buy?

I'd suggest (strongly) Dunwich. Lots of essential components there, and a significant (but not overpowering) boost in game difficulty.
