Why aren't A-Wing Swarms a thing?

By benbaxter, in X-Wing

The boost action of the A-wings is largely moot at PS1, since you're moving first anyway. So 3 points for +1 agility and -1 PS. It's not a bad deal, but it's not like they're amazingly better than the Z95.

Think of it not as a correction, but like having a much larger maneuver dial.

IMHO A-wingers need to take their target locks... you can then save your focus for your defense or still use it for offense... but the target lock re-rolls are invaluable. You roll your attack dice at range 2 or 3 and get two blanks... what are your chances of re-rolling 2 blanks, slim to nill. If you are at range 1 you get to re-roll all 3... that's six dice you're possibly rolling at range 1. If you've got Prockets you roll 2 hit and 3 blanks... with a target lock you can re-roll those three blanks (or all 5 if you need to) + you have the advantage of a focus because it's a requirement of Prockets. If you have your focus and a target lock you've got every advantage if not more than what "Wired" "Predator" "Calculation" or "Juke". You can use those extra points to instead make your A-wing more maneuverable than it is already and outfly your opponent by adding "Daredevil" "Outmaneuver" or "ExpertHandling".

I know some people are in with "Wired" and it's only one point. But if you get into the habit of taking target locks... that's free, costs you nothing but getting into range 3 of your target to acquire it.. With PLT you can get a target lock and still boost or get your focus... Target lock wont go away until you need it or lock onto a new target, and once you have it, it doesn't care if your stressed or not. (of course if your Tycho... que sera sera... he could cares less about stress)

Most Rebel ships have target lock and so few people use it. Empire ships have evades and it gets used more than Rebels using their Target Locks.

I fly a lot of Z swarms. I used to fly a lot of A swarms, but stopped for three reasons.

1). I consistently win tournements with Z swarms, and consistently lose with A's It probably had a lot to do with how I fly them, as I do not do well with tie swarms either, but the results with the Z's are decisive.

2). Cost. 12 points for a Z versus 15 for an A does not sound like much when you get a better dial and an extra green die, but it adds up when you have 5 or 6 of them. I always have a support ship of some type (hawk, K-wing, something) which helps make the swarm more effective, and that extra 8-12 points costs you a ship. The number of ships in your swarm does matter.

3). 1-speed maneuvers. The 1-turn is great for single ships, but for swarms, blocking, in a field of rocks, 1-straight and 1-bank are king. Only the Z's have it.

Wow. Nicely said.

Yes! That one 1 straight is invaluable. After flying K-fighter swarms, though, having 1 sharps is sweet too. Half-tempted to try Starviper swarm just to have all the 1s. If the Ks had 1 straight I'd be flying them more often.

Gemmer is a guy. Green Two during Endor.

I had no idea. I know literally nothing about the pilot names beyond that which I've read here, or was explicit in the movies. I tend to refer to all the ships (rather than the pilots) as female, unless I know the pilot for sure. A habit I picked up from working on aircraft.

In RoTJ Green Three *is* a female, though, although (weirdly) her line was dubbed-in by a guy so people never realised it. She gets blown up right in front of Lando & company by a TIE-In.

So, woman with a man's voice....was green 3 bruce?

(Ducks and runs out of the room, takes an evade as an action)

Are you sure you're not thinking of Sila Kott?

Despite being an A-wing pilot, she's Red Two (Databank) or Red Three (EU)

Green 3 is Tycho Celchu. And you never see a cockpit shot.

Maybe I haven't played against them enough but I can't say I've ever been afraid of an a wing. Maybe it's just that as a primarily imperial player I like barrel rolls too much but for blocking barrel roll feels way stronger than boost and while 4 hp behind 3 evade is solid the 2 attack dice aren't that scary until you start putting upgrades on them like ptl and by that point they're no longer cheapo 15 point fillers and spamming rebel 3 attack ships sounds scarier.
