I assume the answer is yes, but I could not find an definite answer in the rule book.

Renown

Renown is a challenge resolution keyword. After a

player wins a challenge, each participating character

with the renown keyword he or she controls may gain

1 power.

The definition doesn't depend on which side you win as, so it works for both attack and defense.
