Restricted Lists

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

THIS WASN'T A SUGGESTION FOR FFG. This was merely a format proposal for other players who were tired of the cookiecutter 100 point standard match ups to try something fresh.

Okay so first things first. In light of recent news from Android Netrunner preparing for store tournament season they posted sort of a restricted lists for competitive play called NAPD's Most Wanted list. Not going too much into details but it adds some extra restrictions that doesn't ban cards but makes them more difficult to place in decks. now I want to make my position clear that I consider X-wing a miniatures and not a card game where model position is more important than card stats and jousting values so I don't consider a restricted/ban list necessary for X-wing.

However I have though of ways to shake up competitive gameplay not by banning meta game but banning meta pilot upgrade combos with the restricted list. As mentioned the restricted list was taken from the top results of the last premier tournaments (nationals and worlds) and instead of banning powerful cards like Soontir Fel or Veteran instincts it instead prohibits combinations with upgrade cards like IG-88B w/HLC. Also it focuses on making highly efficient blank generics to be up on cost requiring them to take an upgrade while making more room for less efficient generics like Knave squadron pilot which will have no restrictions.

Here is the list

Here is the restricted list using the results from the Top 16 of worlds with the Top 4 of all 2015 nationals.

All pilots listed below can be played, they just cannot equip any upgrade cards listed next to them. Also any pilot with blank must have an upgrade card equipped as long as it is not listed next to that pilot, So a Blue Squadron pilot must have an upgrade that is not B-wing/E2 title, Fire Control System or any other upgrade listed next to it. Upgrade cards are not banned to a ship type instead it is only banned on the listed pilot (so using the list you can take Captian Yorr with Emperor Palpatine, or Hired Gun with TLT and Unhinged Astro.)

The list to fix under preforming ships would be a lot shorter.

All this list would do is; remove some populair pilots from the game and replace them with ships very much like them. (Super Dash replaced by super Leebo and Blues with Daggers, Ys with hwks)

The meta is very diverse ATM (look at your own list, it has ships in all flavours and sizes), so I dont see why this would be needed.

Unless... you hate fun.

  • IG-88 B: Push the Limits, Crackshot, Veteran Instincts, Adrenaline Rush, Heavy Laser Cannon, Mangler Cannon, Advanced Sensors, Fire Control System, Glitterstim, Inertial Dampeners, IG-2000 title, Autothrusters

Some people are dense to the core?

banning the only viable pilot upgrades?

Firespray without K4?

someone wants to see a game of handicapped bantacrap?

Sheesh.

this thread can give you space cancer.

While I don't think it is necessary right now, I think that any game that gets sufficiently large will consider a banned list. Or a restricted list at some point. At some point there are too many cards and ships to realistically play test, and some combos will fall through the cracks and ruin the game if not checked.

We have already had one example of this in x-wing. The phantom. And while they did not "ban" the phantom, they did "ban" the way the phantom worked. If it was allowed to remain the same, many ships that came before it would have ceased to be part of the game.

If we have one card, or ship that is out of balance, we have seen what the answer is. Change the wording on the card through an errata. But what would happen if there was a combo that was too far out of balance?

It remains to be seen how FFG will keep this game fresh and balanced in the future, but as I write, I can't help feeling that the answer will not be a banned list. But will take the form of new things that target the problems in creative ways. Let us not forget that this is a company that has shown us they care about the health and balance of the game they create.

fly casual.

I liked the idea when it was about breaking cookie-cutter builds.

Then I read the actual details, and it's far more about banning any upgrade that's actually viable on the given ship.

You want interesting Corrans? Fine, ban R2-D2. That alone makes you think about him differently. Ask Soontir Fel to fly something other than PTL and Stealth Device. Asking him to ditch Autothrusters and PTL, no matter how novel the rest of the build, is simply demanding that he suck.

I'm also kinda baffled by the Academy pilots not being allowed to fly naked. That's a really aggressive list you've got there...

Wave 8 will probably do as much work shaking up the meta without just ruining everyone's year. That's a LONG list.

Not a good idea and not a good list.

Lol and no...

Is this supposed to be satire?

I'll just put pointless 0 point upgrades on all those lists.

Is this a joke?

*Looks at list*

*Sees Soontir Fel and Carnor Jax's restrictions*

...

Nuts to that, it makes them pretty much useless.

*leaves*

You missed some powerful stuff in that list but that's beyond the point.

If you want to shake things up there are far more interesting ways to do it.

I would sooner restrict some cards through errata. Veteran Instincts only at PS7 and under, things like that.

Nothing to see here, move along

O.o

So...killing any sort of decent combo is the answer? No.

no using ships that can connect to plastic pegs.

No. If they do, someone's getting their arm ripped off. *edit. Lol

Yeah, I get the feeling you don't understand what the Most Wanted List actually does. Nor do you truly understand what a Restricted List is supposed to do. With this list, you might as well be making a banned list on those pilots.

Here is a good example of a Restricted List: Engine Upgrade, Veteran Instincts, C-3PO, Millenium Falcon. You only get to use one card from the Restricted List to use in your squad.
