Interaction between duplicates and "The Things I Do For Love"

By Babarock, in Rules Questions

Hey I'm a bit new to the game and something isn't very clear to me.

  • Does having a duplicate save your character from "The Things I Do For Love"?
  • Can you chose to return a character to your hand even though it has a duplicate?
  • What happens to the duplicate then?

1. The "Duplicates" entry on p. 7 of the RRG says:

"A duplicate grants its controller the following triggered game ability: 'Interrupt : When the overlapping unique card would leave play , discard this duplicate to save that card. (Cannot be canceled.)'"

If a card is returned to hand, it does "leave play." So duplicates do, in fact, work against The Things I Do For Love.

2. Duplicates are triggered interrupts and are therefore optional. You don't have to save a character with a dupe if you don't want to.

3. If you choose not to save the character with a dupe (or can't), the dupe is discarded.
