Just starting out

By khanyeeast, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Bought the TFA core set. Was thinking about getting slave 1, and tie interceptor packs to finish out squads, but not sure what I actually need. Wanted to have a squad built around bobba fett, please educate my noobish self. I come from imperial assault and magic the gathering.

Unfortunately scum Boba is far superior to imperial Boba so if you're interested in more competitive Boba lists you'll need the Most Wanted pack as well as the Firespray. For more options you can also get a rebel Y-Wing and HWK (Most Wanted can reequip those for scum), as well as the purely scum ships like the Khiraxz, Star Viper, IG-2000,etc.

If you want to go the imperial route and want to start playing right away with what you have alongside imperial Boba then people generally recommend Fettigator (Boba with navigator crew). From what I gather it's tough to play well, though I've never flown or faced one. As navigator only comes with the lambda shuttle, with that expansion and the firespray you could play a list like the following:

99 Points

Omicron Group Pilot — Lambda-Class Shuttle 21

Darth Vader 3

Ship Total: 24

Boba Fett — Firespray-31 39

Veteran Instincts 1

Navigator 3

Ship Total: 43

Zeta Squadron Pilot — TIE/fo Fighter 16

Ship Total: 16

Zeta Squadron Pilot — TIE/fo Fighter 16

Ship Total: 16

The idea is for Boba to move last at PS10 so that he can see the state of the board and adjust his bank maneuver as necessary (between his ability and the navigator, you can select any bank maneuver when you place your dial and then perform whichever bank maneuver you want). The TIEs are at PS3 to shoot before the shuttle and peel off the shields of an enemy ship so that Vader can push a crit through to the hull and ideally finish him off.

Welcome to the game and good luck!

Step one into X-Wing.. Fly whatever the hell you like the look of. If Boba is your man, get the Firespray. When People knock the Imperial Firespray (the actual Slave 1 Firespray expansion) it's because it isn't top tier for competitive play. Still great fun with darthlurkers General build.

The shuttle can be quite challenging to fly so I'm not sure I would get that just yet.m you have anything other than the Slave you particularly like the look of?

On the subject of builds, who will you be playing with? As you are just starting I would think most casual play groups would allow you to proxy cards rather than restrict you to just what you own. Hopefully you only have to worry about having every card etc once you want to play competitively.

This.

Its especially helpful if you have a playgroup/buddies that have stuff in their collection they can lend you so you get a chance to try different stuff out. That will allow you to make informed decisions about what to buy (as you will feel more confident that the stuff you like the look of also fits your play style).

Welcome to the game! There's a lot to learn, and often the best way to learn is by doing, so get in as many games as you can!

Good luck!

Exactly what the last two said. Just play the guys you like/have and go from there. The game itself is pretty simple but the learning curve on flying correctly can be pretty steep. Have fun with it foremost and the rest will come. But always remember, the Empire is the ultimate force in the galaxy no matter what rebel propagandist may say. Join us or die.

The Scum version of Boba Fett can be somewhat competitive in the right list. Several people have had success with a Boba/IG-88B list. It would take a little bit of investment, as you'd need to buy the Firespray (Slave 1), Most Wanted expansion, and an Aggressor (IG-2000) expansion. But bringing those 2 ships to the table should be fun and somewhat competitive.

(p.s. For Black Friday there are a bunch of deals floating around. I saw the IG-2000 for a good discount at $18.99 here: http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/206900)

Awesome. Thanks all. I'm going to pick up the slave 1 pack for now and join a few games around town

this. learn the game by flying what's fun, as you pick it up (and potentially get more competitive) your builds will become sharper. Welcome :)

just to elaborate, people think (correctly) that imperial boba is bad because he is expensive and his situational ability does not help with dice

the peak of competitive play in X-wing seems to basically revolve around dice mitigation, whether it be through spamming efficient generic ships, ace pilots with powerful abilities/upgrades that modify dice (Poe), or dice-independent upgrades/abilities such as Tactician

Boba Fett's imperial ability does nothing for his dice, and the Firespray does not have the upgrade slots to allow him to compensate for that (whereas Scum Boba has an ability that lets him re-roll red and green dice, as well as Scum Only upgrades that modify dice)

The Imperial Firespray is generally maligned because it has boba's problem across all its pilots (Except the Bounty Hunter, the cheapest spray, which is pretty efficient for its price), but it is mainly unique in that all the other imperial ships do not suffer from the same problem (because they can either take upgrades or pilots that allow consistent performances)

The Tie/Fos and the Tie Interceptor, for example, can be run as very efficient or very powerful ships

flying Boba (imperial) himself isn't auto-loss, it's just frustrating if you do not enjoy bad rng

Picked up the imperial aces pack also. Kinda excited to put that to use
