So is this an adaptation of the video game? It appears to be based on what I've seen. Wondering if it actually is or if it's coincidental.

It appears to be at least inspired by the game. It shares many of the same game elements. Obviously, PC games and board games don't tend to be direct adaptations due to the limitations of the various formats, but they try to capture the feel of the other one.

This one has not only the title, but it also has the small army of main characters that can perform all sorts of missions and tasks. You start with a few and recruit just like the PC game. Planetary control and resource management also appear to be big players. Unequal power forces and different victory conditions also are a clear similarity.
