Tyranids tournament viable or not?

By Ash_Durant, in Warhammer 40,000: Conquest

Last month The Great Devourer finally became available over here, and we have been testing it out.

Although the cards looked very OP at first, we noticed that they did not pack the punch we expected.

Even with promotions you still struggle in the command struggle.

Since the Toxic Venomthrope needs to infest first to gain the extra bonus compared to the Void Pirate, the Rogue Traider and the Eldar Survivalist you tend to lag behind.

In addition, having no unique units make you very vulnerable to Exterminatus, Doom and Archon's Terror (and then there is AoE damage to deal with).

Having no option to counter any effects (like Routing or event cards) makes them rather vulnerable.

It is no surprise that we did not have any Tyranid Decks in the Dutch Nationals, which was dominated by Dark Eldar and Eldar decks.

What is your experience so far?

From what I have seen this seems to be the general consensus, with Swarmlord being most viable competitively. Most people seem to think Kith, Eldorath, and SMs are the top. hopefully someone proves everyone wrong and wins with Orks at Worlds.

You name exactly the 3 top choices at our national.

Orks can partially remedy with Dakka, Dakka but the resource war is really crucial and without the direct effect like the Void Pirates and Rogue Traders,Tyranids suffer the most.

For now we are waiting for the card pool to grow on the 'Nids.

It looks like Decree of Ruin will help out a bit, but at the current rate this will still take a while (but hopefully not as long as The Great Devourer).

to be fair everyone is pretty darn vulnerable to Exterminatus, doom, and archon's terror as most of the unique units arent that great so you dont really have a point there. Kith has a bad match up against swarmlord but i think old one eye is better of the the two.

I have to disagree on this point.

Most factions have at least 2 Unique characters and can include Inquisitor Caius Wroth as a 3rd.

They may not be all perfect but you can build against it.

Interesting to see that you prefer Old One Eye over the Swarmlord.

What have you seen so far in tournaments and local play yourself?

the signature units are so much better out of one eye and then you also get to run regeneration and get 3/3 nigh unkillable jerks. awakening cavern is better than leviathan ship the only think swarmlord has thats better is indescribable horror. the decks pretty much run the same cards save maybe for a clogged with corpses or two.

Also just because you can do something doesnt mean you should... play the game like you about to win the world championships everytime

Thanks. I'll take this into account ;-)
