Hi!, new player looking for tips and tricks and generally saying hi!

By Mr Ambrosius, in X-Wing

Hi.I only grabbed x wing this week(started with a base pack(the new version) and a few planes,i was very happy with the finish on the pre painted ships, the next day however the addiction and inner geek gripped! Haha I ended up buying every plane for imperial and rebel forces(including the aces packs for both sides, bar the large ships),and a nice folder and sleeves to hold all pilot cards in and equipment cards.

Only managed three games so far(first mission twice, then the 100 point game with asteroids) its a brilliant game, normal ffg quality (I have a good few of there board games) with alot of there mechanics from other games in there also.

Does anyone have any tips that would help me? Any pilots, equipment cards I should use?,any things I should buy that would be useful or essential?,any websites that sell cool upgrade stuff?(I've seen the movement templates, can't remeber where though)

Any help would be much appreciated, glad to be part of the xwing community,i hope to get to know some of you and maybe even meet for a game one day!.

Hi!

As far as tips and tricks are concerned... with almost 30 ships and dozens of upgrades in the game, it would take a while. If there's a particular ship you're interested in playing around with, or an upgrade you're trying to find a good home for, that would be a much more feasible thing to explain.

As far as more stuff to buy, I'd say make sure you have at least six dice of each color. (If you already own the original Core set and the Force Awakens set, you're fine.) Acrylic templates are really nice, though by no means a must-have; Applied Perspectives, Litko, and Team Covenant all manufacture and sell them in the US, and there's a company called Cog o' Two (I think) in the UK. Undoubtedly there are others, if you search.

Thanks for the links,I shall have a good look through.

I keep seeing people saying there have been fixes to certain aspects of abilities and ships for example cloaking ,will this be on the cards I received within my ships pack? And will my rule book have the amended rules? Or will I have to hunt the rule changes down?

Any need to know information? Regarding making ships viable with certain cards ,rule changes and such?

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers Chris.

There's two kinds of "fixes". There's fixes that came in the form of new upgrade cards that work better with specific ships. For those, just look at the upgrade cards. The other fixes are ones that came in the form of changed rules. Many of those have been included in the Rules Reference document that comes with the new Force Awakens core set, but others are only found in the official F.A.Q. and Tournament rules, which can be found on FFG's website on the X-Wing product page (site is down right now for me or else I'd link you to it directly).

Tips?

Er ... never ... always ...

Just play and have fun! Hang around here often and you'll pick up the other stuff.

Why don't you have a face?

Also hi welcome to the mad house.

As to what to buy there are no truly terrible fighters or ships, and as your just starting you don't need to worry too much play what you like you'll find your preferred play style.

My tip: practice against yourself. You start understanding how two squads work, you get a lot of practice with the fundamentals of the game, and you don't have to wait for an opponent to be free to get a game in.

Welcome! Wow, what a treat, having all the ships at your disposal, straight off the bat! It might make things a bit harder to navigate too, though... When I started I flew 4 ties and a firespray until I knew those dials backwards, and only later was I initiated into the dark covenant of Whisper and Fel! ... I think there's something to be said for sticking with a few ships for a few games.

Other advice: see if there's a group or club in your area that you can join - chances are they'll be happy to meet a new player, and won't mind at all if you're bursting with questions. :)

Good choice, by the way - X-wing has so much going for it, and imo a great development team. So important for the future of a game.

Hi!

Tips for what? Do you want to get competitive or is it just really casual games you want to play.

Also if you tell us which ships you like, or at least if you prefer maneuvrable, fragile ships, or turret using ones, or slow, tanky ones, ... That would enormously help to give you tips on how to build a competitive or just fun list with those, and how to fly them too!

I just finished making a video for someone who was asking for help...it might be a lot more than you're asking (not really for the casual player, rather for the really competitive players), but hopefully you'll find some value in it:

Learn the differences between the the 3 factions. For example:

Rebels- Use a lot of tough ships that are dependent on shields and tanking damage. The pilot abilities synergies the best of all factions. Many of which rely on buffing friendly ships in some forms or another.

Imperial- Typically the most fragile yet maneuverable ships in the game. They rely on green dice more then other factions. Their mobility gives them hands down the best flankers in the game. And there are tons of them. Vader, Soontir, Phantoms and Backstabber to name a few.

Scum- Many of their tricks rely and abilities rely on buffing their own attacks. Whether it's Fetts rerolls, Kaths extra auxiliary dice or Bossk forcing direct hits. They also use a lot of underhanded tactics like dead man's switch.

As someone who doesn't get as much practice as others in my league, I highly recommend the 'Earning Your Wings' thread, proper maneuvering can offset other shortcomings while you learn the flow of the game.
