To those of you that are hatin' on star Wars Rebels

By Talonbane Cobra, in X-Wing

I actually kinda hope so. Not yet, not in season 2, but something needs to happen there.

Hell, I am ok with Ezra dying, the only ones I want to really absolutely live are Hera and Chopper.

Don't be wrong, I'm not saying i want the main cast to be decimated, if there are no hard deaths apart from a couple clones/Ahsoka I'd be fine. I just think that unless we see Ahsoka in EP 7 8 or 9 she should probably be dying, or else going into self imposed exile.

Chopper gets to hold a gun in the next season

We are all going to die.

Will be interesting to see if any characters carry over into Rogue One.

I'm going to cover this with a spoiler... For those who haven't read Aftermath yet. But it does tie into Rebels.

In Aftermath Wedge mentions he was recruited to the Rebel Alliance by Fulcrum, so Asoka at least lives long enough to recruit Wedge.

That's actually pretty awesome.

Was the read in general bearable? I am kind of interested, but after the leaked parts also really scared. I hate present tense writing in almost all cases.

Chopper is awesome.

Chopper is love. Chopper is life.

Stawp hoovie, stawp!

Was the read in general bearable?

I thought so, but I seem to have a pretty high tolerance for stuff like that. Movies, TV Shows and Books that people just hate because of bad writing/acting/whatever... I often don't mind. So I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask.

But I know Barns and Noble and I assume Amazon have the first chapter as a sample that should give you an idea of if you can finish it or not.

Put me in the enjoys Rebels camp. The series hasn't shied away from the more brutal part of Imperial Occupation, the characters are interesting for the most part*, the cast generally avoids the invulnerable protagonist trap children's shows can easily fall into, and Tarkin and Vader were both competent, legitimately menacing villains as befits their status from the films.

*Zeb being the exception. I wouldn't mind so much if he were only a year or two older then Ezra, but he's supposed to have been part of an Honor Guard. Sabine comes off far more mature than he does, and she's only a year older than Ezra. Zeb is in his 30s, making him the oldest member of the cell >.>

EDIT: That being said, as I go through season 6 of Clone Wars, I am having a real problem with the casting of Tim Curry as Palpatine's (replacement) voice actor. Palpatine is very much a wolf in sheep's clothing, but Curry is not even trying and using his normal sinister voice.

Good to hear. I do have a pretty high tolerance for stuff like that as well, having actually enjoyed the Bounty Hunter trilogy and Shadows of the Empire (both fun, but clearly not brilliant and with a distinct lack of Star Viper). Its just that this leaked chapter was like 3 pages of Wedge talking to himself being like "Yeah I remember that, its from the movie you love! Han always said "fly casual" didn't he? Right?". But it doesn't sound like it is just all that if you found some enjoyment. I'd guess I can find it, too.

Or he's already been recruited and we just haven't seen him yet.

As per the admittedly non canon TFU this isn't unlikely. Wedge was a member of the rebels in that, afterall.

The highest compliment I can give Rebels is this...

I'm kind of an Original Trilogy snob, but I like Rebels very much.

It's been mentioned before, but it is so very West End Gamey.

The sample that was released with Wedge was the most egregious but it is present tense the whole way. The story and new characters are interesting enough that I was able to eventually (mostly) stop noticing the tense

There are some E7 setups, and possibly even a new Anthology (or Star Wars Story or whatever they will be called) side story established (though that will probably only be in book or comic form but still has possibilities)

but he's supposed to have been part of an Honor Guard.

A couple thoughts about Zeb... One yes he's a bit of a archetype, the lovable goofball who is always getting into trouble. But he's also a skilled warrior and very serious when things get hot.

We don't know what the requirements of being part of the Honor Guard was, it may be a pure test of martial skill, and if you are the best you get in regardless of how big of a goofball you may be.

Plus that, from what I gather pretty much his whole race has been eliminated, which would bound to have an effect on a person's outlook.

Its just that this leaked chapter was like 3 pages of Wedge talking to himself...

I don't know if I just got used to it or what. But the first chapter or so was bad, especially the part where he used Wedges name at least once a sentence. It was 'Wedge did this' and 'Wedge thought that'.

But either I stopped noticing it, or he stopped doing it by the 2nd or 3rd chapter. The sample I got however was like 17 pages long, at least it was on my tablet's nook reader.

I like Zeb, he's the only one that lets his inner child show. He makes me happy. Just like I like Chopper, he's the only one that lets his inner homicidal maniac show.

I saw the first few episodes and stopped watching for a while, then a few months later decided to pick it up again. After episode 6 the show REALLY picks up! And the season 2 premiere, OMG!

I was on the fence with rebels when it started but after a few episodes I got sucked in. They really are telling a good story even if it is only a cartoon. The battle with Vader at the beginning of season 2 reminds you how frightingly powerful he really is. Also its a nice change of perspective to see Jedi who aren't particularly skilled. Very reminiscent of Luke from the OT.

The writing is a very particular style. If you like the Ian Fleming 007 books, you should enjoy the writing style of Aftermath.

the first episodes where i little goofy, but near the end they where kind of serious, hell the episode with Tarkin i had to make sure my 6 year old wasn't looking when the Inquisitor executed the 2 Imperial officers.

One does not expect decapitation in a kids show!

As others have told you, the present tense feels natural after a while and it didn't bother me at all.

However, I was not particularly thrilled by the story. Honestly, I really think the writer directed an all right Star Wars Edge of the Empire module with some players, and he transcribed the sessions into this book.

The characters are an unlikely bunch of cliched nobodies desperately trying to tie in with the main Star Wars story. Wedge is a McGuffin, and the main plot leads to nowhere.

Then, because it didn't feel relevant withing the Star Wars continuum at all, sprinkled a few Interludes with famous characters doing unrelated stuff.

One of the few positive things that I get from this book is that at the end they introduce a mysterious character

that if not by name, at least behaves and talks a lot like one of the most beloved imperial grand admirals in Star Wars,

perhaps cueing his entrance in a later book.

Worse, didn't they give him *two*?

Shhhh! That's spoilers for KOTOR 3!
