Ok, got it, thanks. Dunno. There are quite a few boardgames out there, and finding an entirely new set of gaming mechanics feel a little unlikely. Even Descent is nothing original, the ancestor was Doom (and probably no Doom would have ever existed if they didn't invent the first dungeon crawling games a lot before). If we remove the theme and we look at the mere abstract mechanics, then there are very few engines that have a lot of different incarnations.

While games workshop did produce board games back in the mists of time they for the most part were not as successful as their miniature games. A lot of the successful board games were also not based on their warhammer ip.

Do not forget that ffg do not have license to produce games workshop ip miniatures games.

Also, like it or not (and I don't) but sadly warhammer fantasy ip isnt as popular as us fans would like.

So they need to make games that are not only legal with ip, but also are profitable comparing research, development, production costs and sales. It also needs to be popular. Card games fit all that criteria so its a good solution for ffg.

Personally I am loving the card games.

If they were allowed, i think ffg would probably reprint warhammer quest as a miniatures game even if it would compete with Descent, but they cant due to IP. Developing it into a board game could be just too costly for the prospective market. Card game fits.

Im buying it :)

Yeah. I don't think FFG can make the game you want, which appears to be a miniatures-based Warhammer game, akin to the old GW 'specialist' games. As I understand it, FFG does not have a license to make Warhammer miniatures games. Unsurprising, since GW would make such a game before licensing others to do so. A shame, since in 2015, FFG is far better placed to make a good new game than is GW.

I sort of was rambling, I know. The subject of this thread is disappointed yet interested, which is what I am trying to convey.

As a whole, I am underwhelmed by the Warhammer Fantasy section of the product section of the catalog.

With regards to the Warhammer Fantasy 3rd edition RPG and its transition to Star Wars. It is what it is. I would state that as an RPG, it was solid, but my take away is that in the end, it was not well received by the community.

For Descent, I mean come on. The whole thread is talking about how Warhammer Quest put FFG in a weird position with regards to a Dungeon crawler and the fact that Descent, Imperial Assault even sort of directly competes with it.

The rest of the Warhammer line is basically card games. Some of them are great. My only point really is, back to the subject line. I am disappointed in warhammer quest as it is yet another card game. I am interested in it because it is Warhammer Quest.

About sums it up for me.

I am not disparaging FFG if that is your concern.

Nah, I didn't think you were disparaging FFG, it was simply that I didn't follow properly the thread behind your thoughts. I see what you mean, and I can understand your reasons. I think Alex scored a good point when he said that the fantasy setting for WH is not that popular as we may think; plus there are certainly a lot of other reasons behind the choice, and possibly some of these are beyond our knowledge.

Dunno.

Honestly, I think we're lucky in having a few WHF games not licensed by GW. I don't see FFG starting making miniature games for WHF, so, I don't think we can have more than a cardgame or a boardgame with the Old World setting.

And I feel lucky because we actually have Old World games now that Age of Sygmar is the official WH setting.

But trust me, I see what you're saying

I do think there is (and has been for years) a lot of general upsettment with GW that they themselves do not reprint/revive WHQ, just scan the internet to see it, so I do think FFG catch a lot of that flack as a byproduct of their cardgame proposal. People are dissapointed with GW mostly. (General comment not specific to any individual poster).

I'm really excited for this game and will be 100% buying it, but I have to say, the waiting has grabbed my interest enough for me to consider making a print and play of the original game (I never owned it, have advanced heroquest instead) so the internets unofficial/dodgy pnp set for this game is really tempting right now hehe

I find tabletop simulator a wonderful way around print and play, especially when I cannot play the games due to time or table constraints.

Speaking of Table Top Simulators...Blood Bowl 2 is great fun on the PS4. Just saying! Go High Elves

Think I'm going to sit on the sidelines and see how this one goes for a bit. I've bought into too many Warhammer Fantasy products from FFG that have been prematurely abandoned. I can only go down that road so many times before I need to be a little apprehensive :) If it's still around in a year and getting love-n-support maybe I'll dive in.

Yeah, that opinion doesn't make sense to me. Even if they don't support it, you still have a fantastic game with no need to spend more money on it. Just play it until you've got your $40's worth and be done with it. Besides, core sets are usually a better value than expansions anyway. You might as well get what you can from a good system regardless of whether it will be expanded.

Of course, this is just how I see it. Others may think differently and only see worth in a fully expanded line. That's fine too, but I just don't understand that mentality.

Pretty easy to grasp, really. My interest-level lies in card games that are epic in scope and between 800-1200 cards. I want to see the game flesh out a bit before I buy and have no interest in a starter/core set on it's own. Will it drop off the market before it's "complete" like Diskwars or WFRP? Will it crash on the landing pad like Invasion? Stating that I just want to wait a bit and see what happens isn't Heresy on any level. I doubt I'm alone there. :) Like many WHF games before it there seems to be promise here. I'm just not feelin' Day 1 support this time. Pretty much a non-issue. Cheers.

Warhammer Diskwars leaps to mind. The WHFRP seems to be kind of in limbo/not getting new content.

I am someone who got two of each set for Diskwars, and I am frustrated that it was abandoned after teasing the Wood Elves, Lizardmen, Skaven, and Dark Elves and getting nothing more than single heroes and limited units out of it.

Really they aren't that great with GW support in general

Relic has gotten two expansions but seems done, Black Crusade they feel like they rushed the last book combining two into one to be done. The same with DH 2.0, it feels like they are rushing out all three books to say 'done' and move on to something else. Deathwatch, Rogue Trader, and Only War are all pretty much abandoned.

Meanwhile they are hammering hard at Star Wars everything, I understand with the movie releasing in a couple weeks that they are trying to sell Star Wars stuff but it feels like they are wrapping everything else up to jump on that ship and ride it into the ground.

That said, I did pre order WHQ, and I can only hope it gets support and more than four heroes and existing heroes get more options.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is obviously finished, but when looking at it's store page, I don't have any feeling of it being underdeveloped - the amount of content released for it is HUGE.

There is indeed a good chunk of content for WHFRP. In fact if they had been able to complete the Elf box it would have truly crossed the finish line. Very close there. A fantastic game.
