Eldritch Horror: Under the Pyramids

By GAThraawn, in General Discussion

Looks like all the speculation about an Egypt themed expansion is correct, complete with side-board (and presumably Nyarlathotep). Mentioned in the in-flight report today at GenCon, as shown on FFG's twitter. Announcement to be made on the website next week. Image shows new investigators, the typical new conditions and items, and a new side board, with everything that comes with that (new encounter decks, gates, etc.)

While I too would have presumed Nyarlathotep, from the image, it looks like Abhoth is the GOO we'll be facing off against. Whether or not Nyarlathotep will also be included remains to be seen.

I couldn't make out much from the image, and wouldn't recognize Abhoth if I saw it. Last big expansion had two Old Ones, so here's hoping Nyarly is the other. If they've spent so much time spoiling and teasing him, only to not include him in the one expansion he makes the most sense in...well then they're really trying to drive us mad!

EDIT: Checked the picture. Can you actually make out details on the Old One card at all? Or are you going off something else? Certainly the tentacles on the box may just be generic Lovecraft tentacles. But the image quality is far too poor for me to make out details.

This is the image from the BoardGameGeek twitter, and it has less glare. You can't see it too clearly, but the name is clearly short and looks like it starts with a 'A'. The upward extenders on letters near the beginning and end are consistent with Abhoth, and the picture looks reasonable, given the art from Arkham Horror.

That is a much better picture, thanks for sharing. I'll certainly agree that that card does not say Nyarlathotep. But again, I'd hope in a big box expansion we'd get two GOOs.

EDIT: Obviously just staring at this picture now. Are those Health and Sanity improvement tokens, just beside the new Gate token? That's a nifty new mechanic.

Agreed - I would certainly hope that two GOOs are in this box, and if so, I would like to think that Nyarlathotep is a shoe-in.

Looking at the investigators, I'd say tentatively Min Thi Phan, Rita Young, William Yorick, and..Harvey Walters? Last time we got 8 new investigators in a big box, and there are only 10 investigators left for them to use who aren't from base game Arkham...and for some reason, they're gender split 7/3. So if FFG wants to add 4/4, they'll have to take at least one investigator from base Arkham. It makes sense then that they might have gone with 3 or 4 from base Arkham. Wendy Adams, while not impossible to add to EH, does make less sense trotting the globe than she does wandering the streets of Arkham.

Good catch on the health/sanity tokens! I was really lost as to what those could have been.

I just looked back at the announcement image of Mountains of Madness, and it only shows one GOO and three investigators, so it's not out of the question that we'll get 2:8. However, investigators were included in Strange Remnants, which means that putting only 4 in here makes the same number of investigators total between the small box-big box pair as the last pair, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were only 4. I certainly hope not, though.

Those are negative Will and Strenght tokens. It seems the you might be cursed by the dark pharaoh and those are decrease tokens... As a big box expansion one GOO is just not enough, so it's more likely that we'll get at least two.

There are four paths leading out of the sideboard. They go to at least two different places, as I see two long names and two shorter ones.

Maybe this isn't just a pyramids sideboard. It may feature several new locations around the world. This would make sense in the context that Nyarlathotep is worshipped worldwide. As long as those aren't connected this would effectively add new spots to the main board.

I love all that speculating.

Gets me really excited, keep going, guys! :)

FANTASTIC!!!!

This is the EXP that I dreamed!!!!!

Really excited now, I was hoping a new expansion would get announced for Gen Con. Egypt was actually one of the last places I was hoping would get a sideboard because it doesn't interest me that much, but seeing how they did Antarctica in MoM, I think it'll work well in Eldritch Horror.

One of the guys from FFG talked briefly about Under the Pyramids after he showcased Warhammer Quest for Board Game Geek's Gen Con stream and you should be able to see that here: http://livestream.com/boardgamegeektv/gencon2015-day2 around the 6:56:36 mark. He talks about not diluting the game, and how the game will tell you what specific parts to add in the game to make a cohesive story.

Someone in this thread from Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/3fb2s2/ffg_announces_under_the_pyramids_expansion_for/ mentions something similar. He says that the game will never have a ton of sideboards because they are only in the game when an Ancient One or Prelude card calls for them. So far, it would seem both the Antarctica and Egypt board could be used at the same time if you had a Prelude card that called for the Antarctica board and used Abhoth which would call for the Egypt board, or vice versa. I now think this is what the man from FFG was referring to.

Are you guys happy with this new style, had it already occurred to you? I assumed you would be able to use all sideboards at once but this direction certainly keeps the story tighter and doesn't make your space too cluttered.

Amazing, amazing!!!

Oh, looks like I have a little EH itch I'll have to scratch tonight.

This was another hit of fantastic news.

They were really on a roll today.

What if instead of Nyarlathotep we could have a specific Mask Egyptian-tied? Like The Beast or The Dark Pharaoh? This would allow consistency with the title (I doubt the game would be called "Under the Pyramids" if several locations of the world were shown on the map) and a Nyarly-something to be added to the game. Leaving also space to other Nyarly-themed expansions for the future

We need Naryalahotep and we need him asap. He is my favorite AO in Lovecraft universe

The other picture has a mystery card visible, and it's for Dark Pharaoh - so that settles this matter. I just need one Nyarly-themed expansion to be happy, and it's the one that would feature many masks.

I have dreamed about it - every mystery tied to at least one mask. God of Bloody Tongue - epic monster. The Dark Man - special encounter deck. And so on. Research encounters might call for some less-known masks.

Another subject: The prototype box mentions it has an Active Expedition Token inside, and I'm very curious why would we need another one ( crosspost ) .

Weren't they also included with the MoM-Expansion, besides an additional Mystery-Token?

Seems I accidentally clicked on the "Report"-Button instead of "Reply", when writing this answer. Sorry about that.

Nope. At least I haven't got any extras. You might have mixed it with another adventure token.

Edit: Additional info.

Mom have additional Mystery token (Green color with a question mark in it).

Actually I dont have any info about new AO from new big box…. Abnoth or something? From wich novel he come from?

Abhoth is one of Clark Ashton Smith deities. It made the first appearance in the The Seven Geases short story.

You can read some info about it here

[H]e described a sort of pool with a margin of mud that was marled with obscene offal; and in the pool a grayish, horrid mass that nearly choked it from rim to rim... Here, it seemed, was the ultimate source of all miscreation and abomination. For the gray mass quobbed and quivered, and swelled perpetually; and from it, in manifold fission, were spawned the anatomies that crept away on every side through the grotto. There were things like bodiless legs or arms that flailed in the slime, or heads that rolled, or floundering bellies with fishes' fins; and all manner of things malformed and monstrous, that grew in size as they departed from the neighborhood of Abhoth. And those that swam not swiftly ashore when they fell into the pool from Abhoth, were devoured by mouths that gaped in the parent bulk.

—Clark Ashton Smith, The Seven Geases

Abhoth ("The Source of Uncleanliness") resides in the cavern of Y'quaa beneath Mount Voormithadreth. It is a horrid, dark gray protean mass and is said to be the ultimate source of all miscreation and abomination.

Obscene monsters constantly form in Abhoth's gray mass and crawl away from their parent. No two of Abhoth's children are alike. In general, they are complex life forms, but the majority of them are simple-minded, acting on impulse. Their forms can be anything from amorphous blobs and singular body parts, to [strange] humanoids and monstrous mutants. Abhoth's tentacles and limbs grab many of them, pulling them back and devouring them. Most of those that escape simply wander off, only a few of them tend to their sire's needs. Abhoth has a twisted and cynical mind, and can communicate telepathically with others near him.

Abhoth is also mentioned in Colin Wilson's The Mind Parasites.

If this Big Box follows the same pattern as MoM, which it should, then we should be looking at:

-A side board, as seen in the picture

-At least 3 new rumors relating to a new effect (Hypothermia for MoM, Burns(?)/ Dehydration(?) for BtP?)

-3 New Epic Monsters (Mask Monsters?)

-New Prelude Cards

-2 new AO - Abhoth(?) and hopefully Nyarlathotep, or a messenger like The Black Pharaoh

-8 New Investigators - Now, from what I can tell, only 8 are left without new ones being created. Rita Young, Luke Robinson, Rex Murphy, Wendy Adams, Hank Samson, Minh Thi Phan, Roland Banks, and William Yorick.

-4 Artifacts/Relics which connect to a new mechanic or condition (Masks?) And one will most likely be needed for a Mystery - a la Crown of the Serpent.

-1 New Exposure Condition that will be relatively easy to get. Burn (?) or Dehydration (?).

-An exploration deck similar to Hyperboria, Kn'yan, and R'lyeh.

Sorry for the conjecture but since this is the relevant chat I transposed a discussion from another group.
