So Whats Next for Arkham????

By spr5858, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi Just got my last expansion for my favorite game Arkham Horror "Innsmouth" and cannot wait to play it.

But what now? Will there be more expansions for this game. I would like to see more for sure. Or maybe a range of figures to replace the card investigators. Surely this cannot be the last expansion for this game.

I love it. corazon.gif

Steve

Well, I still have 104 games left in my current schedule, which will get me to 10 games with each GOO from AH + DH + IH. Maybe KH after that gui%C3%B1o.gif . Only 3 games in the past 2 months (3 in August, 0 in September), this month will probably be another AH-dry month. So I'm set for quite a while yet.

In my gut, I feel it isnt over yet...

...at least, that's what the rats tell me.

Even if we're done with Board Expansions (and I'm NOT saying we are), the small box expansions have all taken a specific Ancient One and lathered extra theme all over It (with varying degrees of success). Assuming that Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth have been covered by the Board Expansions, it still just doesn't seem right to be bailing out on Yig and Ithaqua (and maybe even Azathoth) without giving them a good theme injection. I think that FFG could safely assume that most Arkhamites do or will own Dunwich as well, so Glaaki, Tsathoggua, Shudde M'ell, and Abhoth should all be eligible for the same treatment.

Glaaki box Glaaki box Glaaki box... cool.gif

A Yig or Glaaki expansion would be great. An Ithaqua expansion would be neat, except that if a "cold" theme is used, it won't make sense when played with Cthugha.

Unless he's ruining the white christmas Ithhy was so nice to supply

I would have to agree. It's not over, not by a long shot.

Id still like to see my brainflash come true - Providence Horror, with appearances by the mythos circle as guardians or (shudder) heralds.

I pretty much have all the expansions I need. I don't feel like the game is lacking anything. I might be intrigued by a Dreamlands board.

"They think it's all over..."

"Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!"

"... it is now!"

I do hope there's another expansion or two. We are not into the business side of FFG. Much may depend on how the game is selling, and how the Innsmouth Expansion is selling. These people do not do this for charity -- nor should they.

As for the individual who wanted to see a Providence expansion -- wasn't Arkham supposed to BE Providence? If so, the base game is really taking place in Providence. Maybe I am wrong about this.

We have all the expansions. I see where many decide to just keep every card of every expansion in every deck. In truth, it is difficult to play this way any more because the sheer weight of cards at this point will water a particular expansion down to an extreme degree. So you have the supplemental boards but rarely have any visits there, or have much happen there.

Likewise, some of the decks become almost unmanageable. A certain amount of culling can improve the action and the fun.

AH was always a game that invited a certain amount of customizing. Rchard Launius's "house rules" article was prominently featured from the beginning on the AH site, and certainly this article invited groups of players to modify a few things.

In that light, it seems like a certain amount of editing the decks can improve the focus. We have taken to running one expansion at a time with the basic set, and doing some selection on the mythos cards. This seems to allow the theme of a particular expansion to come through more clearly.

However, there are many ways to play, and we don't say we have the best idea.

Arkham was based on Salem, and both are in Massachusetts, not Rhode Island.

Everyone's talked about making a Mountains of Madness expansion. There could be a ship track where you could take a couple turns to get to Antarcica or back, and where you get Ocean encounters, such as poor weather or finding unmapped islands. Of course, all these spaces would be Aquatic locations ;)

I've thought about whipping up a Severn Valley expansion. I had some good ideas for special board mechanics and Other Worlds that wouldn't water down the Other World deck. It would use the ship mechanic and would have its own weather/urban/mystic cards, so there would be two environments in play at one (one for Severn and one for Arkham and surrounding).

Mountains would be nice... Although I'd be willing to buy packs of monsters heralds ancient ones and investigators... I don't necessarily want another board (the game is huge as it is). Although something to make the expansions work smoother together would also be very welcome... And in the meanwhile. I'm going to keep making AOs and heralds :') (speaking of which, I'm going to post some right now).

edit: ::laughter:: I'd also be willing to pay a few bucks for a comprehensive FAQ ;'D

I hope "Cult Of The Golden Scarab" as an official expansion as it is a very very good expansion... Just need a few correction ;)

And so it will be avalaible for everyone, no need to print / cut / glue something :P

I would like to see:

1) A set of alternative personal stories for every investigator

2) An expansion for those that have every expansion (mythos cards that open gates in Dunwich and put clues in Innsmouth for example).

3) More Epic battle cards and sinister plots to add greater variety.

I would be happy to see more small box expansions, but don't think we need any more boards.

All great ideas. However I NEED a Mountains of Madness board. llorando.gif

One of the most pleasant surprises of FFG was the personal stories. Flamethrower I think is working on alternative personal stories that incorporate the seldom used elements of Arkham like the Sheldon gang and Darke's blessing. Those would be great too!

Personally I say don't add more to Arkham: make a sequel! How about a Cthulhu Dark Ages varitant with most of hte same core rules as AH but a different, medieval setting and different threats and encounters? :P

I would absolutely love a Mountains of Madness big box expansion, especially one that incorporates some of the ideas here (I'm already drooling over the possibilities for "traveling to Antarctica" mechanics.) The only thing is they'd have to break the "X Horror" naming convention. Mountains Horror? Madness Horror? I don't see how they could make that work. Of course breaking that convention would also make the expansion stand out as the epic adventure it ought to be =)

Or they could just call it: Arkham Horror: At the Mountains of Madness.

For me:

Mountains of Madness

Dreamlands

Severn Valley

And possibly a sort of Quest book- kind of like the one used for Tales of the Arabian Nights. Each AO could have specific encounters at locations in regards to their larger story. Just a thought.

For me I would just like an official reply to a heated question. Are we going to get anymore Arkham material? Maybe more official characters or GOOs like they did with Penny Arcade. Are we going to see anymore campaigns? If not, why aren't we? Many of those league scenarios were still perfect for groups that did not participate in the league. Can we get more of those? The art used on the scenario cards comes from the card game so it is not like they have to pay an artist to make more pretty art.

I just want answers. I hate being left in the dark. I understand that no more expansions may be coming because sales may have died a little, but the scenarios are PDFs. At least give us the template used to make them so that we can make our own to share with the community. There has to be a reason that board game companies like FFG, Days of Wonder, and Avalon don't just create custom material for their games.

I know that if I came up with Arkham I would play the game and constantly be looking at what I can add that would not require an expansion. Material that would hold the attention of the players. I do this all the time with my current games such as designing new land titles, units cards, scenarios, characters, encounters, etc. Then once I think they are ready, I post them to the forum and on board game geek to share with the community. I don't care if my "rival" or a person I despise is in that group I still post the material.

At first I started posting my works for Runebound 1st edition to try and get noticed, but the only people that seemed to care were the players. I have talked to game reps at Gen Cons to see why they don't do this, but I have never gotten a clear answer. Istead they usually look at me funny then point me to one of their new products. Maybe one of you guys that do the free GOOs and Investigators can answer me. It has always bugged me, but not to the degree of making me dwell on it. Now I just post articles, ideas, tools and variants because the companies aren't.

FFG looked to be heading back to its roots (before this new site was made) when they did the league for Arkham, created a dungeon creator for Descent, and asked me to write outside articles for them. Do you guys remember the old FFG site? It had dev blogs, rants and raves and kept us updated on games as they were being developed etc.

Sure that site was ugly but I liked the attention player received when the devs and comany reps would post pictures that made them feel more apart of a community rather than another customer given a forum to talk to other customers on.

As for what I think is next...I couldn't tell you. FFG games have limited runs that sale out quickly. Then they take time to produce another run and fix any errors and typos to the materials (something I disagree with but meh). The wave of the revised are still produced in a small quantity and are hard to keep in stock for the distributors. Heck even FFG has a hard time keeping their own games in stock just look at the store. My guess is because the games they make are more expensive (better plastic molds, card quality, and art) so they are forced to produce a small number or they will loose profits. That is understandable. Another reason they may produce very little supplies is because they have aquired and created way to many games to keep up to date on and are forced to cut printing quantities to pay off companies like Games Workshop, Blizzard, Disney, Square-enix, etc. Those companies don't sell licenses for cheap. This I don't understand. Why buy unoriginal material when it was original games like Disk Wars, Twilight Imperium, and Runebound that help FFG become something more than just a mere failed euro comic company.

I would like to see a Mountains of Madness small expansion, but I can't even hope for it because I don't know if Arkham is done. I was scared when I saw their idea for producing 2 minis a month, because for me that was pretty much FFG milking Arkham players to the very last drop.

My hope is that they go back to working on their licenses and stop buying others after Warhammer Roleplay releases. Stick to new worlds and ideas and remain original. This way they don't have more board games to support than Hasbro does, scary, I know. They can produce games in larger quantities because they are not paying off the licenses. They could also use the money saved to hired people that are willing to submit material just for the purpose to keep a games interest alive.

Whew! that was a lot. Sorry for Wall of text. I feel better now.

Woo! Spider pig, spider pig (etc.)

Have you not been to the fan creations part of the forum? I'm not sure what the difference is between what you're asking and Strange Eons.

Second anybody (that is, steve o, mageith, and so on) who wants a MoM exp. But yeah, new content, that'd be great too. Anyway I've never been unsatisfied with AH since the beginning, its probably my FFG's FFG - first favorite game ;) - and it's one of the games that had the most expansions made... so can't say I was deceived by my favorite games brand :) life rocks :)
