My girlfriend took part in her first x wing tournament last week so I painted up my falcon for her to use (as she is the reason I painted some of my ships pink). I think it needs some grey panels to fit in with the outrider, but i'm happy enough with it as it is at the moment

This is my scratchbuilt XQ Space Station from the X-Wing series of games. It is made completely from plasticard and greebles from other model kits (airplane models). Painting it was very simple; I just based in black, painted over in a light grey, and added dark grey and silver highlights. A black wash that dirtied up the entire build finished it.
You guys have seen this before, but here's my Scum Y-wing. I painted it before dials were revealed and was pleased to see that my color scheme matched the dials so well!
I also had a good time doing Ooryl's X-wing.

How much do y'all thin your paints? I'm having trouble with brush strokes showing up on my first two projects, and a friend suggested I thin my paints more. I've been adding two drops of water from an eye-dropper to about every 2ml of paint. Should I dilute it more? Would that even help with the brush strokes?

Unfortunately there are no easy answers to that question. Thinning paints is very much a process of trial and error, as not all paints are created equal. For instance, yellow paints generally have a low density of pigments but lots of medium. These you need to thin more than normal just to be able to paint them but thinning them too much mean you don't get much of a result. On the other end of the scale is black, which often do not need a lot of thinning but when heavily thinned, it usually give a good result regardless. And this assumes bog standard painting, no specialised techniques like glazing, drybrushing or washes. Not does it take into account different brands and makes of paint.
The only thing I can truly say is that if you can see brushstrokes when the paint is dry, you must thin the paint more, I just can't say by how much. Also beware the dark side of not thinning your paints enough.

What kind of paints are you using? Assuming you are using acrylic, like the Citadel range from Games Workshop, it's less of a 2 drops to 2 ml than it is a consistency thing. Thin it so that it has the consistency of milk. I usually take my brush, dip it in water, put a few drops of water on a white palette (like plastic card, etc.), then dip the brush in the paint and add it to the water. A good example of this is in any of the youtube videos put out by Games Workshop, such as "how to paint a Necron", etc. They will show you on the video how much they thin the paint and what it looks like.

I'm using Golden brand acrylic paints (not a gaming paint), and I'm definitely not doing any advanced techniques yet!
Follow-up question: though I've thinned my paints, after three coats it looks like I'll have the same problem as one coat of un-thinned paint; namely, the appearance of too-thick paint with globs of paint around bumps in the plastic. Solution suggestions?

I had to do some research on the brand you are using and I'm fairly confident it might be causing your problems. The brand you are using seems to be intended for large scale painting, not wargaming models. Paints specifically formulated for miniature painting are without a doubt better for the job. Yes, they are comparatively much more expensive but take it from someone who commission paints all year round, even the paints I use a lot I rarely have to restock more than once a year.

If you're using a sharpie to draw lines on the S-Foils for call sign, like Red 4, and you don't get either the line or the spacing perfectly right, you can put some alcohol on a cotton swab and wipe off what you've done... The alcohol will lift up anything done with a sharpie so be careful... Go over it a few times with the end dipped in alcohol, then with the dry end, and then repeat once (should be enough) to give you a brand new surface to make your lines again... I did it several times on my X-Wings which you can see on the previous page...
