What advice would you provide to a new beginning player?

By Elixir, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello everyone,

I purchased the core set, Vaders tie, Slave I, and a tie bomber quite a while ago, to have done nothing with the game ever since. I would like top start playing and become somewhat competitive, but have no idea on what sets are worthwhile. I have found through other games, that there are sets/ships that are really good, and other ones that are not used. If you're going to recommend to someone what ships are essential to have in collection, what would that be?

Also: Are the larger ships used in competitive play? Or are they kind of a bonus side mission, they look fun?

thank you for your help,

Elixir

Everything you need in order to learn about x-wing can be found here:

Its got lists, strategy guides, manoeuver guides and a bunch more useful stuff.

If you really want to get into this game, I would suggest practicing. A lot. Its a very visual game and it takes a while to really understand the distances and how to visualize what the board state will look like after everything has moved (an incredibly important skill for this game!). Also, you need to do lots of homework: reading about what ships work and why and how, and more importantly, learning all of the manoeuvre dials is incredibly useful to be successful in this game. Sounds like a daunting task, but its worth it because this is a game with lots of depth that rewards skillful play and executing well-laid plans (although bad luck can screw with you on occasion, I find it the exception, not the norm).

So get practicing! VASSAL is a good way to get games in (even if you don't want to play against others, you can use it to practice on your own with different moves, openings, asteroid placement, etc).

Welcome to the game!

dont buy too many ships. build slowly. test out each ship before you buy multiples. everyone i know who plays this game has LOTS of ships they never play. id say in general rebels are cheapest faction to build a competitive list. the bubble will burst on the 2 ship meta soon but if big ships r ur thing grab a falcon. a single decimator if u r into imperials. one of my fav ships is the firespray, its awesome and u can repurpose it as a scum ship once u get the scum and villiany expansion. what faction do you like playing most? the tie-advanced fixes are coming soon, cant wait for that but thats because i like imperials as a faction, soontir is boss, seriously watch him flown by a good pilot with decent upgrades and hes amazing... vader-like even but more offensive.

If you play Rebellion I'd suggest a couple of B-wings. With their 5 shields they are more forgiving if you make some movement mistakes. I'm a new player and playing in my first regional this weekend to learn and get to know players in the community.

Welcome to the game. Fly casual.

Checkout cardboard dungeon on YouTube. The guy gives a nice break down on the ships, cards and pilots in each expansion. And don't buy 7 Z95s.

The obvious advice is, of course, to play. Starting with the recommended set up in the Core Set to get familiar with the game. After you have a good feel for the flow of the game and how things function it's time to customize. Pick the ship that excites you the most and build around its strengths and weaknesses. Play with any friend that may have an interest. Also, check out local comic book shops to see if one has open play.

As far as finding new ships in an easy place:

Squad builders abound, this is the one I use:

As far as ships go, it sounds like you have a good start on Imperials.

I would recommend building that faction and the purchase of Imperial Aces, Tie Interceptor, and/or Tie Phantom.

A Lambda Shuttle can be a fun ship to run and comes with a number of crew cards that are also useful on the Firespray and Tie Phantom.

The X-Wing Wikia pages give you a breakdown and pictures of what sets are out there and what is included when you buy.

One of the most frustrating things I have found is that there are certain upgrade cards only available in certain expansion packs and you end up buying something just to get the cards.

Also - the FFG forums have lots of info from players on rules questions, squad lists, and even event information to help you find places to play.

For me - my son bought the game and got me hooked, so I have someone that will play with me fairly regularly. I started playing with his group, who got me to go to a tournament a few months ago. I am the newest and oldest player in the group, but find it fun to match wits with everyone. Sometimes I lose and sometimes I win, but it is fun and something I really enjoy.

I think if you find a local group, they will welcome you and give you advice to help you enjoy the game.

Play the core set and try and decide what you like. As was said you have a bit of Imperials now and co hi ld easily expand on that. Another TIE fighter or two and an Interceptor and later the Imperial aces box would set you up well.

I second the advice of checking out you tube videos for ship and list ideas.

Get in the first tournament you can. Tell your opponent it's you first, have fun and don't take yourself too seriously. Ask for feedback after any match, x-wingers will usually provide very constructive advice. You'll learn more in one tournament about what ships, lists and strategies intrigue you than anywhere else. You'll also likely meet some great people to game with and learn from!

My best advice is learn to fly.. Set I some asteroids and random ships and practice flying around them as a solo ship then as a squad.

Watching recorded matches on Youtube can be helpful when you aren't able to play a real game. You can get an idea of what squad builds are competitive and once you have a build or two you like can see how more experienced players fly similar builds.

Actually the best advice that could be given is DON'T START. The game is addicting. The only piece I'm missing is the Tantive. I have at least doubles of everything except the Defender. Oh, I forgot to mention this madness started in January of this year.

One of the younger players at the flgs has described this game as "plastic crack". Can't speak about the stuff on the street but as far as the game goes it certainly is.

Now what you need to do is fight the allure of the Dark Side and join the Rebellion!;-)

Positioning is everything, learn how to fly and get around your opponents arc. Be conservative. You may want to attack the first chance you get but bide your time and get some good manoeuvres in and for the next 2-3 turns your gonna roast the Rebel scum! Haha
