Hello, few questions I'm hoping to get answered about VASSAL. For the record, I am *just* smart enough to have downloaded it, got the proper module and latest updates, and I have figured out how to watch other people play a game. Beyond this, I am lost.

1. Is there a place to go to, and how would I get there, to find the commands on how to actually play a game? From start to finish, picking my ships, getting the templates etc, as well as actually playing, like taking a focus or evade, rolling dice.

2. Can I play a game against myself, ie. test a squad and play both sides?

3. Once I figure out #'s 1 & 2, will VASSAL tell me if I've done something illegal? Did I take too many actions, did I land on that asteroid and forget to roll for damage, will it even tell you if I did in fact hit the asteroid? Stuff like that.

2. Start a game offline, practice squad building and familiarize yourself with the shortcuts. It makes playing matches a breeze! Anything you can do with your ship is only a right click away with all the shortcuts. One of the things to remember once you start to play against others is to always wait for your opponent to say "set" when performing their actions to signify they are finished, and always say "set" when you're done doing yours.

3. The game alerts when dials are being changed on the board when they're face down. Besides that, all else is basically left up to the discretion of the players (and sometimes those watching) just like in table top play. There's less of a margin of error due to exact placement, and most of the time its very obvious if there's overlap.

Forgetting actions/triggers happens to everyone. Most of the VASSAL community is very casual about this stuff, and me personally as I use it as a practice source for tournament builds, I make sure to remember triggers even if they affect me negatively so I get a fair representation of how my build will do in competitive play.

Overall, VASSAL is a great way to get a quick pick up game in case no one local is available. Lots of great players on there, but don't get intimidated. Most are extremely patient and helpful.
