A conflict came up recently during a comfortable night of getting our asses handed to us by Ctulhu and the double Innsmouth Heralds;
Does the Deep Ones track increase when a monster surge occurs? My group has never played it that way, but technically, the tranck increases whenever a gate is stopped from opening. While the text gives the Elder Sign and Science! factors as examples, it could be argued that an older gate does, in fact, prevent a new one from opening.
Needless to say that our three-player games would become very, very short indeed in this case, so we won't be doing it no matter the official rulings. That doesn't mean we don't want to know of course.
