Killing an Ancient One?

By Peter Egham, in General Discussion

Just wondering if anyone knew just how the battle with an awoken Ancient One works out? Not talking about literal rules, I get them, but rather how it would 'actually' go down?

When the doom track reaches zero, the God wakes in his area, and the Investigators have to 'kill' it, but how could they do that? Is it a physical vessel? Or a half-formed proto-God before its full awoken?

Again, not the literal rules I'm askign about, but the 'story' and logic of the game.

when we played the RPG, god battles "so to speak" were imagined to be in corporeal state, or a psychic battle

Well, in Arkham Horror, it isn't killed. It is driven away and it goes back to sleep. I imagine it's the same here. You never win, really. You just delay the inevitable.

What Soakman said. You are trying to banish an Great Old One/ Outer God, while trying to stay alive and not get grabbed by tentacles, crushed, sent to another dimension, etc... With some it's possible to drive them off by inflicting enough damage. (For instance Cthulhu went back to sleep after someone drove a ship trough him) But in those cases they never die.

I Always imagine the smart party members casting spells such as call/dismiss (name-of-entity) while the rest of the party is trying to distract the monster to buy their friends some time. Or just desperatly trying to somehow damage the extradimensional horror.

That does make sense, thanks, and explains why the more corporal beings, Cthulhu and Yig, can be fought, but Yog-Sothoth must be traced and followed - as he's everywhere.

I wonder, then, how Syzygy will end if Doom gets to zero. Will it be a series of Encounters like Yog, a boss fight with some summoned horror? I doubt they'd do an instant death as Azathoth has that down already.

A syzygy is not something you can actually fight, so I'm not expecting a boss fight. I guess soon everything will be revealed

"Shaggy"? Oh great now I got an image of Shaggy and Scooby running away from Azathoth. :)

Or worse: Fred and Velma unmasking Yog-Sothoth:

Velma: "Jinkies! Yog-sothoth was really old man Henderson!"

Henderson: "And I would have gotten away with it without you meddeling kids!"

Speaking of being revealed, is it me - or has there been very little news revealed? Forsaken Lore got an update about once a month, and we've gone to months with nothing.

Was FL updated regularly because it was the first expansion?

Sorry I'm typing with a tablet and I do not have any idea on how to disable the bloody autocorrect thing.

It has been a bit of a news drought.

I imagine Syzygy will probably summon some other AO to fight when the doom runs out, or it will simply be a final significantly difficult task such as closing all gates and defeating all monsters on the board before so many reckonings occur or some such.

*shrug* I haven't played enough EH lately to even remember what the other AO's final mysteries are.

I doubt Syzygy will just game over though.
