Renegade Guardsmen?

By DieVorhut, in Only War Game Masters

I know I have posted a few topic recently, but I have nothing better to be doing while i wait for my players to be free and so, I do a lot of thinking about this stuff.

This time, I was wondering about a renegade regiment. Has anyone done one and if so, did you use anything from black crusade and how well did it play?

Built a few as an exercise. Some Gue'vesa, some Severan Dominate. Some Chaos. Yet to actually play any of them though.

My only issue with playing as renegades is that for the most part, it would be too similar to being the Guard without the advantages of being in the Guard - meaning less fun for the players.

I agree with that cpteveros. I never though of Gue'vesa though. I feel like that one could do enough to not feel too much like regular guard.

I also think a Gue'vesa would be interesting, but my players aren't 40k literate enough to fully understand it, I think. There is a paucity of information on human involvement with the Tau, too, which is too bad considering the interesting scenarios for role playing it presents.

Has anyone had games where the players went renegade or Chaos? I've had a few players try to do it and it just ends poorly.

not played it, but i think it defo can work, if they go renegade, are they chaos, independent or mercenaries? do they still fight for the emperor (just in their own way) or are they evil? there's a lot of potential to play a less military esque campaign i guess

The Gue'vesa in my game has been an interesting point of tension in that he fiercely toes the line as to where his loyalties lie.

As for playing Traitor Guard in Only War, I think it's a fantastic idea. Sure you lack the monolithic support structure of the Imperial Guard, but it's a whole other theme of roleplay, and it isn't as though there aren't other organisations out there fielding human soldiers. Plenty of groups in the 40k universe will give you the tools you need, if you're willing to die for their cause.

Enemies of the Imperium apparently has some rules for running it and shield of humanity has the traitor drawback so some rules are there. I would probably run it as a prequel to a black crusade game.
