2 simple questions from a new player

By Arithil, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

sorry if they seem retarder but i just recently bought AH and went quickly for the Dark Pharaoh and Dunwich exp since i loved it so much

i went through the instructions and faqs and forum and can't find the answer (maybe it's out there and im just bad at searching)

1) when resolving monster surges, do i count the open gates in Arkham AND Dunwich and do i place the monsters evenly upon the gates in both cities? if so, and for example a monster surge happens in dunwich, lets say there's 1 gate in dunwich, 4 in arkham and the monster limit in arkham is full. i can't place any in arkham and there's no limit in dunwich, does it mean i place 5 monsters on 1 gate in dunwich?

and

2) i have the ability Visions which allows players to discard spells and gain clue tokens equal to the sanity cost of the spells plus one. what if the sanity cost is Special?

i'll be really grateful for clarifying this for me

thx

1) A monster surge is supposed to summon a monster at every open gate. Keep that idea in mind, and then "activate" each gate individually:

Gate in Dunwich = place 1 monster
Gate 1 in Arkham = 1 monster...monster limit reached...place monster in Outskirts.
Gate 2 in Arkham = 1 monster...monster limit reached...place monster in Outskirts.
Gate 3 in Arkham = 1 monster...monster limit reached...place monster in Outskirts.
Gate 4 in Arkham = 1 monster...monster limit reached...place monster in Outskirts.

If you can kinda keep that rhythm in mind, instead of drawing all monsters at once or lumping all the gates together regardless of city, any monster surge situation will fall into place.

In the Advanced Class, we will deal with "Number of Gates < Number of Investigators" and "What if Kate is on the Surge Gate?".

2) Special = 0

Welcome to the Carnival, Arithil! gran_risa.gif demonio.gif aplauso.gif And don't worry: every single one of us was retarded once. (I traded Clues, and totally messed up Monster Movement.)

In the scenario above, 1 to the gate in Dunwich, rest to Arkham, since Arkham is at limit, Outskirts. 5 monsters, 5 gates, 1 monster per gate.

Probably count it as 0.

Stupid jgt7771 lengua.gif . Wait, you got MEQ as well, scratch that.

TBH, I was always SO anal about starting things right, I got it right from the get-go.

got some new questions

we played with glaaki + tulzscha tonight

as it turns out cultist are undead stalker elusive and annoying

the thing is tulzscha makes cultist walk towards elder signs, but since they are stalkers they should follow investigators

what if they have to decide between an elder sign and investigator...? luckily it didnt happen so its just a purely philosophical question

another thing, concerning KH, it says that you cannot reach any location on the Kingsport Head except by normal movement - no spells, cars, returning from being lost in time and space...

but there's an exhibit item in the CoTDP called i think summoning glass which allows you to have an encounter in a location you're not currently at. so basicaly i could use it to trade in trophies for the Changed card without going to the kingsport head. again, just a philosophical question as i'm still waiting for the right moment to do that :]

I'd say override Glaaki's stalker cultists or don't bother playing Tulz with him. :') Problem solved.

As for the Summoning Glass, yeah, I've used it that way, but the unpublished FAQ (it's still in progress, but I proofread the first version) specifically ruled that you can't use it for that (I'm 95% sure, I vaguely remember that and being disappointed with it, although it's been a few weeks since I've read it, double check with Tibs, he also did a proofread). Oh well.

hmmm interesting question...we dont have an answer on whether the Glaaki/Tulzscha cultist obeys the AOs directive or the heralds, but Id go with the AO (it is the boss after all), or if you prefer, choice of First Player. The default in unknowns is "common sense, leading to whatever screws the investoigators more", but it doesnt always come down that way...

ah, I suppose that means my question about using it on closed locations is also, no.

Ummm... I don't remember reading that in the FAQ, you should repost this question in the questions for the next round of FAQ thread.

It was asked back in the old forums as part of the early list of collected questions I drew up there which were later copied by coltsfan into the new forums, so it is in the future faq thread above and has been for some time.

::Sigh:: I wish that there was some sort of index or organization for the questions, unfortunately it's extremely chaotic, so I'm not going through 23 pages for you ;'D

oh no please Id rather wait anyway happy.gif I was just speculating on the answer based on what was said. How long before you reckon it will manifest in euclidean space anyway?

I have *no* idea. Don't expect it any time soon would be my best guess.

this might be a stupid question

but can you use injury/madness cards during an epic battle?

for example: any investigator that wishes to attack this round must lose 2 sanity

i have 1 sanity so i take a madness card and keep attacking

logically this makes sens cause you can go reeeeeally insane shooting at something like Nyarly

and there's a lot of probability that you'll get injured in the process

but it feels a bit like cheating

and i don't recall seeing it in the rules

If you go to 0 Stamina or Sanity during final combat -> devoured.

If you ever go insane or unconscious in final combat, you're devoured.
