Wave 1 Expansions - Dumb question but does it complete the Core Game

By Ken at Sunrise, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I have the Core game though I've not had much chance to play it yet. I noticed that it comes with counters and some miniatures (Luke and Vader for example) that can replace the counters.

My question is, if one purchases one each of the Wave 1 expansions does that complete the Core game counter/token wise? I have enough figures to replace the figure counters that is.

Thank you for your help.

P.S. Why isn't it painted? Armada is supposed to be (I think) and X-Wing is. I don't paint nor do I have the patience or skill sets required to paint. Maybe I'll get lucky and find someone who would be interested in painting my core set and wave 1.

Thank you again,

Yes. This completes the core game. It adds all the models, agendas, skirmish/deployment cards that the core game references.

Why isn't it painted? Same reason as Descent.

The wave one minis replace the tokens such as General Weiss, Royal Guard Champion, Han Solo etc.

The fact of the matter is the game would cost a lot more if all the minis were pre painted. You should have a look at Sorastro's tutorial in the painting subforum. As someone who had never painted before nor thought I could I've had promising results following his videos.

Thank you...

and I don't see more that one of each?

Do you mean you won't need more than one?

Not unless you're really into Skirmish and want to play two player match ups each with Han Solo etc.

The only duplication of Wave 1 purchases you would ever consider is the Rebel Troopers and Saboteurs, and only if you plan on playing with a Trooper or Saboteur heavy list.

There is no reason for duplicate purchases for the campaign.

No I don't intend on doing mirror matches, this is only for fun. I may end up doing skirmish as much as anything else.

So if I understand one each of the expansions is all that I need.

That is great, I'll look at picking them up this weekend.

Tell your mooching friends to buy their own set if they want to use Han!

For campaign play one of each is all you need. I ended up getting two of the Troopers and Saboteurs just so I could paint two squads for each, one standard and one elite. Plus I intend to give Skirmish a go sometime and it's only fair the Rebels have fodder just like the Imperials have with Storm Troopers.

Thank the stars that they are not pre-paints. Anyone with a collection of WOTC minis will tell you how they cringe everytime they look at those pre-paints. Most pre-painted stuff is garbage, with the exception of dust tactics premiums, which cost twice as much as non-painted dust tactics.

X-wing is easy because on a little fighter that size, it doesn't take much to quickly paint it and have it look good... of course, anyone with star trek ships have to cringe at their prepaints as well.

Also, only big ships in Armada are prepainted, fighters are not.

Yep! But still looking at what I have I wish they were painted. And no it is very unlikely I'll ever do it.

Honestly Ken,

Go watch Sorestro's videos ( https://www.youtube.com/user/Sorastro ). He does an amazing job of teaching technique while painting the actual figures. Plus his voice is really mellow and relaxed, Like a British or Aussie Bob Ross.

Many people here on the forums who have never painted in their lives have decided to give painting minis a first go after watching Sorestro.

If you don't want to paint and can't find someone that wants to paint them and aren't interested in paying for commission work, it wouldn't be the end of the world if left unpainted. They come in different base colours and would just look like nice boardgame pieces.

Yeah, I just wish they'd done the Scum figures in, say, an "army men" green plastic instead of the same grey as the Imperials.

I wonder by what approximate percentage the price of the game would increase if somebody painted them (assuming they're painted well enough, but not necessary golden demons level).

3rd party paint jobs tend to run either based on value of models (For squads in say, Warhammer) or price per figure.

The value method I've seen go from 25% to 50%, depending on the quality and speed desired. Price per figure seems to average around $30.

With that in mind - IA comes with what, 30-something minis? I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the price to go up $30 for a "Well enough but not Golden Daemon Level."

Heroclix or Star Wars Miniatures levels would be quite different, since they do the bare minimum paint and also use inferior plastic.. I have no idea what that would do to the price.

A good commissionsed paint job will run 200 to 350 on the low end, 350 to 600 on the medium end, and 600+ on the upper end

I have heard of the "You paint my minis, i'll buy your box set" deal is pretty common.

It was cheaper for me to buy WOTC pre painted minis than to get someone to paint mine.

Some of the figures are well done. Lots are not.

Holy crap... I used to charge peanuts for my paint commissions!!!

Based on the amount of hours one spends to paint each individual miniature, the price should go up by quite a bit.

I wouldn't mind paying for someone to do the painting but it would depend on the price, quality and style, of course.
