Common rules questions best answered graphically?

By Klutz, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, I enjoy making graphical representations to show illustrate common rules questions, and people seem to enjoy them as well.

I'm thinking of putting together a collection such graphics, either as images that can be easily included in the forums when the questions come up, or as an easily printable PDF.

Are there any common questions that would benefit from a graphical representation?

Here are the questions I've addressed so far:

While I like the animation, it should have moved from the other end while the regular move should just blink from end to end. The gig gives the impression that you move the ship along the template.

But keep up the good work. A picture is worth a thousand posts!

Klutz, I'm pretty sure your info regarding Tactician is wrong. The defender is not within your arc at R2.

Edit: Apparently I've been out of touch with X wing for too long.

No one has common questions they think having an image to explain them would be good? :(

Not yet.

Your recent overlap vs. touching examples could be animated, so you see how the ships executed maneuvers and barrel rolls.

While running a step count of the combat sequence in upper right corner, animate some dice rolls and explain how hits are modified and/or cancelled by Sensor Jammer, Autoblaster, Heavy Laser Cannon, Ion Cannon and other abilities that modify/cancel dice

I think there are lots of card interactions that cannot necessarily be shown graphically.

That being said, there are tons of movement base and firing arc based questiona you can graph.

For example, hitting two ships, red stop moves (what ships do you touch), closest arcs, obstacle related questions can all be shown graphically.

I like this idea though, maybe I should sift through this subforum for more ideas.

I like them although when they aren't carefully done they can sometimes reinforce a bit of confusion.

While I like the animation, it should have moved from the other end while the regular move should just blink from end to end. The gig gives the impression that you move the ship along the template.

This is the example of that confusion. I'd say the "fix" is to just start the animation with the ship jumping to the end with it's overlap and then backing off until it clears. Bonus for showing the moving ship in a "warning" color until it gets off and is safe.

I have an overlap with a barrel roll that I post up every now and then.

and there is also the parallel bases with an obstacle in between and how the line can be chosen by the attacker.

I had thought about doing a "How to figure out what the shortest line is" image, but had forgotten about that!

An image that shows valid/invalid Boosts, Barrel Rolls and Decloaks could be nice.

Throw in the difference between those and something like Daredevil to be thorough.

I like this one, although I don't know that the ships sit nearly so cleanly on the templates. I'm especially frustrated by resolving large-based ships on 1-speed turns that bump.

Here's a first draft of the format I'm considering. This one deals with overlapping ships!

Any feedback is appreciated!

Typo at bottom of 1st column when discussing touching. "Shipd" instead of "ships".

Second to last paragraph, I wouldn't say "in contact with the red a-wing", because in contact sounds like touching, I would use the term overlap. Something like "but the position he should end up in then overlaps the red a-wing", along those lines.

Visually, looks great.

Maybe a "how to post a pic" on the forums. I keep seeing ocassional requests. Then get Majorjuggs to make the link to it sticky.

The Mac version I did here:

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/103818-how-to-post-a-pic-well-on-a-mac-at-least/?hl=%2Bpost+%2Bpics

Second thing. Show how a template move can have the template go off the board but the base lands back in completely safe and how an overlap can send you out of bounds.

I updated the image about overlapping ships and added a new one about checking arc and range!

I might forget to update these if I make new versions, so refer to the OP for the most up to date versions.
