Storage !

By Hemux, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi there,

I didn't know what to do : create a small topic for that minor stuff I wanted to share with you all arkham horror fans... or say it somewhere else. Well. Let's say that the forums aren't too flooded this weeks, so I don't have any scrupules/remorse to do so ! ;)

Yesterday, I bought train tickets (no Rail pass...) for holidays in the country. And I couldn't help but thinking I wanted to bring AH with me. My fiancee agreed (she s as crazy of this game as I am... maybe even more) (do you imagine getting back from work in late afternoon and your woman oppening the door begging "just a quick game, just a quick game !" ahah ok im a bit exagerating). ANYWAY, she agreed, but yelled TOO MUCH SPACE taken by the boxes. ****. Dilemna.

SO here is the real subject of the topic : WHAT do you do for the space taken by all the 7 (4+3) boxes for the game ? And WHAT do you do to bring them along when you leave for somewhere you want AH with you ? And WHAT do you do to setup the whole game, do you put everything in separate decks, or do you have special boxes and bags and rubbers to pack everything even for a perfect stored setup ?

I'm so sorry I didn't take any pictures to bring to work today, because... alright, yesterday evening, after that perturbating matter, I actually took the whole evening to make a perfect storage, and guess what : AH reduced to 4/7 of its space !!! Ok, not 1/2 (4/8) but 4/7 ! I'll tell you what : I put EVERYTHING into 2 boxes, and that's it ! I took AH original box and Inssmouth one (my fiancee prefers the cover of that one) and I put everything in it ! Hard to believe, but it's done ! Any photo might be done tonight for the interested or doubtful ones.

Now I think next move will be to do as I've seen at some stage on that forum : buy me a second toolbox that I'll keep empty and use for setups : cards and tokens in each tiny space of the toolbox. Better find me a good one...

Share your experiences ! and sorry for the useless topic (that's half of a forum's reason of being, anyway)

I was facing a similar problem for my vacation to France coming August ^^

I bought two 250-cards Ultra Pro Cases: One for all Arkham Encounters, the other for all Mythos Cards and Epic Battle.

Then three 150-cards Ultra Pro Cases: One for Innsmouth/Dunwich/Kingsport Encounters, one for Base Game Other Worlds Encounters and one for Dunwich/Kingsport Other World Encounters + all the Gate/Rift Tokens.

Then two A-7 Businesscard holders for ~400 cards each, one holding all the items and spells, the other the rest of the small cards.

Finally two PLANO trays (originally for fishing baits), one with all the small tokens and spawn monsters (and my 10 Glow in the Dark Ctulhu D6 ^^), the other with the 48 investigators and all the normal monsters.

That leaves me with one big box for the four gameboards and the Investigator/Ancient One sheets.

Hope this helps,

Enas

It was really interesting, but to really help me further you might 1) give me some links to find/see/buy these products you talk about and 2) tell me exactly where you ll come in august ! Cheers !

There's a nice "review" on BGG where someone describes how he got everything into 2 boxes, and everything is prepared for playing: boardgamegeek.com/thread/412734

Thanks for the link, mate.

Enas, Enas : I want links to buy your cards decks holder ! Pleaaaaaaase ! Before the holidays ! Gimme links gimme links !

I checked your links : I already planned to buy fishing boxes at some sport shop around here, so that's ok. The ultrapros can be found too in amazon.france, so that too is ok. Would you recommend these products ? There are around 1000 (young !) Ancient One cards for the whole Arkham, right, so that makes a lot of boxes !

As for the last product, you found it in amazon deutschland (your country i suppose ?) that is good because i got a reduced prize over there thanks to a past problem, so I have to buy something over there ; would you really recommend the Karteibox for the tiny investigators cards ? there are almost 800 tiny cards in Arkham, that would make two boxes, right ?

Amazing, you're going in Arcachon ! This is almsot where I'll be this august too ! I'll be in Hourtin, a bit higher if you know where it is. Now that is a funny coincidence. Cheers !

*g* funny coincidence indeed.

Like I said initially, it´s 3 of the smaller Ultra Pro boxes and two of the 250-card boxes. That holds all the big cards and the Gate/Rift tokens. Two of the business card holders are enough for nearly all the small cards. I had about 50 left which went in with the big cards in one of the 150-card boxes. It all comes together nicely imo.

Best regards,

Enas

Thanks Enas for the details.

I wanted to provide photos for my storage setup, here there are ! (okay I m proud I reckon) Have fun !

I used a great fishing box for the tokens (I love that for my games ; I intend to buy a big one for Descent for instance) but I still need to find boxes for the cards. I bought the 2 Kroko you did recommend Enas, for the Invests cards ; for the big, Ultra Pros are low on stocks right now, and I'm not sure I so like them... I don't know yet !

Don't have Innsmouth yet but I have managed to get everything into 2 boxes so far... but I was worried about how that might change after I get Innsmouth. I'm really glad you got the fishing box inside the game box - I was assuming that if I went with that kind of storage I'd have to carry it separately.

Not a useless thread at all! :)

I use the small-boxes as trays inside two big boxes. They're almost exactly as long as two sets of the Encounter/Mythos cards, which works out nicely - all I have to do to get my Mythos and OWE decks out is pick them up. The whole thing including all expansions fits into two big-boxes with only a small amount of overstuffing.

I could save some space on that, though. Currently I use the KiY box as a storage box for all 48 Investigators attached to their bases, so as not to damage the headstones by repeated attaching and removal. Storing only the headstones and 8 bases would save a chunk of room.

Token storage - why do people dis the ziplock bag and say it makes things hard to find? I have bags as follows:

  • Spawn monsters
  • Masks
  • Bast tokens
  • Blight tokens
  • Unique GOO tokens (Ghat's faces, the Zhar token, Eihort's thingies)
  • Hearts
  • Brains
  • Clues
  • $1s
  • $5s and $10s
  • Elder Sign/Doom tokens
  • "Always possible" tokens (Terror track, closed shops, First Player marker etc)
  • Rifts

I also have three black velveteen bags: one small for the rift markers, one medium for the gates, and one larger one for the Monster Cup.

Setting up the game, I just tip the ziplocks out into discrete piles and scramble spawn monsters into the Cup. It's done in less time than it takes to put out the cards.

But in much more time than what I now do - I used to have hermetic food bags like you, but look now at my tokens : i take the box, put it on the table, open it : tokens ready in ten seconds. Can't do quicker, I think.

Still have to work on the cards, though ; hopefully I'll get Enas' recommended boxes soon !

Quicker to sort, slower to use. I have slender fingers and I still generally find that extracting items from a widget box is a process of "C'mere you - nuts, got one too many - buggrit, a Sanity marker just dropped into the Clues, have to fish that out...", and so on. How thick-fingered people manage is beyond me; it's worse than texting.

Also, your box takes up more real estate than my piles. You have to have 40+ unused Investigator headstones, the Bast tokens and everything else on the table whether you use them or not. I can empty only the bags I need and put everything else away to one side. For those of us who don't have a gaming table rated for TI3, bags are better.

Ahah, well put, that one. Me tiny man, that is why.
