The End Times timeline & map

By jackdays, in WFRP Gamemasters

I have been updating Warhammer timeline for years, keeping all the current happenings listed. Well, then came The End Times . Now, it very much seems that my efforts are pretty much at the end as the Warhammer world burns... Hopefully not, but let's see how these things play out. But, I did start a timeline for The End Times.

You can find the The End Times Timeline and The End Times Map from my Kaleva Hammer site and from there Universal Rules & Timelines -page.

Here's few notes about the timeline:

  • Timeline was created to serve Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay . To organize the events and to connect them to all the other events published in all the other products. The focus is in the Old World and the Empire. It also has various small other details there and there.
  • It serves years 2521 to 2524 (for now). The End Times do not end there. In fact, they basically start from the year 2525, when all the really apocalyptic events start. But most of the adventures and campaigns for WFRP2 and WFRP3 were created and set to this time period.
  • It is not just The End Times. I have collected previous information from the WFRP sources, WFB sources, novels...etc. and updated those events to this timeline best I can. For example Storm of Chaos (SoC) doesn't anymore happen as it happened originally, when it was published first time. It's rebooted, not gone, but different. So, all the stuff related to that have changed more or less.
  • I have presented few ideas for various WFRP campaigns set to this time period. What might change and how.
  • As for campaigns - For example events of the new The Enemy Within (WFRP3) are now placed on the year 2522 (as they are in the campaign actually) and connected with other stuff going on. Originally I placed them to the year 2521 in original SoC timeline, but The End Times changed this...
  • With this timeline, there is also a map, with various new places mentioned in the timeline/ The End Times . I have used the Gitzmans Gallery's Super Huge Detailed World Map .
  • So, this is just the first draft, and we will have too see if I have interest to update the timeline to the end...

I'm assuming you've read the End Times to its conclusion? With the first two books being excellent in my opinion I felt the last 3 progressively got worse with the final book being the fantasy equivalent of teenage love poetry - utter drivel. So now the Universe has been obliterated and we are in the dawn of Warhammer Bubble verse, what are your opinions on what's rumoured to be happening with the Warhammer Universe out of interest?

I can imagine the answer and I'm of course with a strong opinion myself on the matter but I've not seen the subject specifically broached on the forums so I thought I'd ask!

This whole End Times nonsense is a joke. The first two books were good, really good even. They've breathed some fresh air into our beloved, stale setting. But then... Good Guy Malekith, Sigmar being trapped in a Wind of Magic by Tzeentch, endless references to 40K, Vlad Von Carstein as a saviour of the Empire and finally... rocks fall, everybody dies. Warhammer Fantasy deserved a better send off then this... thing. As a long time player and GM, as well as a WFB enthusiast I'm pissed. Bubble Hammer won't be able to repair the damage that GW has done to it's own franchise and I certainly DON'T envision a 4th edition of WFRP in this new, post apocalyptic world.

Shame. **** shame.

Totally Agree.

However as an aside, the latest rumours as to the Rules of 9th edition look like they've been cut and pasted from replies I've made on threads to what I'd do to change 8th edition, well not exactly but very close. BUT I'm holding this rumour with very little credit currently because its not from a source I know or respect.

That's friggin hilarious. :D Either people don't give a crap or they're so desperate they are actually using others wishes as actual rumours.

Just my two cents: the 9th will probbaly focus on skirmish/small scale games. Ironically the emphasis on small scale battles like in 6th and 7th edition is generally a better idea than the "we need 100 halberdiers or we're bummed" approach that the 8th tried to push. Not to mention the waaaaay too big influence of magic and monsters/monster cav.

The End Times provided pretty good ideas/plots, good characters, good battles - as mentioned already in this topic. The start was very good and there are number of good plots/background stuff for RPG...

... But, then it just went downhill all the way to final crash. There are many, well, just stupid things there. Not to mention, the destruction of entire world.

It's just sad how it all went down. It really takes the entire point of the story, when everything is basicly destroyed. But, was everything destoyed? When 9th comes, there probably will be some story, how the time and the world continues? Will it be good one? I have strong doubts about that... I fear very much about this bubble-warhammer-thing. Hope it is just a hoax.

@Jackdays

Which End Times books would you say are worth buying RPG-wise?

I try to stay positive in this fast review of them all. If you put aside the stupid plots and most superhuman things (incarnates)...etc. Good things in every book are:

  • Some plots
  • Background information, including many personel
  • Good information about various armies & races, with pictures, descriptions, pictures, details (lost of details)...
  • Overal, all the books are pretty nice looking. Graphics are good, pictures are pretty, and - this is very rare - some books actually have good maps in them.

Books:

Nagash, part I : Well, haven't we been waiting for this to happen? :) I think this first books is the best one. so far the plot is good. Ok, Kislev gets crushed on the way, Bretonnia is really bad shape, but the only really stupid thing is, that the Skaven just take over Estalia and Tilea just like that (later we know they also invade all the Dwarfen kingdoms AND Lustria. So, this is - well, little too much for the rats to handle, I think).

  • Civil-war of Bretonnia is good possibility for various Game of Thrones -style of campaings in Bretonnia. War is short, but it divides the land. Later on the Undead armies of Arkhan the Black harash the land...
  • Plot to resurrect the Nagash and the journey Arkhan and Mannfred must make to collect the missing ingredients is good. Return of Nagash gives pretty good possibilities for campaings against the Undead. If you just take away the almost God like presence Nagash has now.
  • I think the war in the north and the Auric Bastion is good background too. Return of Vlad and the fall of Balthasar Gelt.
  • And then at the end there is ALOT of battles in the Nehekhara and details about the Tomb Kings. Nice info, not really needed.
  • ...oh, and lets not forget the return of Drachenfels... :P

Glottkin, part 2 : This is the part where it all goes just little too far. Great invasion of northmen divided in three armies. They manage to take Talabheim, Marienburg and finally also lay siege of Altdorf. Idea is good, but to attack three major cities (and Carroburg on the way)... HOW MANY MARAUDERS ARE THERE?! I mean tens of thousands probably would lay weeks, even months of siege against these Marienburg and Talabheim, not to mention would they have enough personel to attack Altdorf after this? argh...

  • If there had been only one attack force pushing through the Empire towards Altdorf, this would have been more logical and better plot. Still, I like the plot. I like the northmen and I love the Norse (my thing). This book gives much information about their forces (those dedicated to Nurgle).
  • Book gives nice background for waiting of the scary invading army and the Enemy Within style of plots in the city, before the great siege.
  • It also has few nice maps, including new map of Altdorf (big one, with details).

Khaine, part 3 : Elves, elves, more elves... This is Ulthuan fluff. Dark Elves come, war starts, and then there is civil-war. This is it. If you like to build something in Ulthuan and play Elven campaing, this provides good deal of details, information about characters...etc.

Thanquol, part 4 : Skaven book has number of different plots going on all over the world. Most of them I dont like (like the fall of SOOO many kingdoms). How many rats are they? And can they really do this? I dont like what happens in the book, but it still has much information about the Skaven clans (even the smallest), their important personel, different forces and finally the dreaded Verminlords (Skaven daemons). But, book also has details of Lizardmen and Lustria (with maps). AND Dwarfs, especially Karak Eight Peaks (with maps). Stories in the book also include the fall Karak Kadrin (argh) and the fall of Middenheim (this too)... Nuln. New info about Nuln - Jeah. But, then it falls too... :(

Archaon, part 5 : This is a big book. It has much information, but overal, it is just the end game. Everyone surviving, attack each other and we see who wins. But who really cares, because the world is destroyed... This is probably the worst book.

Thanks for the exhaustive answer!

My biggest irk was with how many cool places/kingdoms/people were destoryed/killed off screen. I mean Tilea, Estalia, Nippon, Cathay - they didn't even have a chapter worth of infor about their fall. And the Empire... Wasn't Talabheim supposed to be almost unconquerable? The northmen took this city almost as an afterthought. Same with Marienburg. It really showed that this event was ruhed and basically made as an "ok we're done with WFB now back to 40K!" startegy by GW.

Warhammer Fantasy didn't deserved this.
