So im going to get into x-wing soon. I have played with a friend a few times and always played Imps. I have no urge to play rebels but when scum comes out I plan to try them out. So I come here asking for advice on Imp lists and what people are thinking about the Scum lists. Thanks in advice for any and all help.
New to X-wing, would love some advice
Best advice I can give you is go with what you like the look of, enjoy yourself and have fun! You'll soon develop a playstyle and preferences which work for you. This is a fantastic game, have a laugh and enjoy it.
If you're thinking of playing Imperials AND Scum, then Firespray-31's will be your friend as they can be used by both factions.

Tons of information there.
Im for sure looking at the firespray, and in the games I have played, the interceptor has been my friend.

Well if you love flying Interceptors (and who doesn't?), the StarViper will be a must buy when it finally arrives as well!
I can not agree enough, just breaking into this game I would buy what you like first and have fun with it. If you decide to get more serious about the game then we can talk list construction, the meta, and things like that. For now focus on moving ships on the board and getting the rules down.
Now, that being said here are some helpful tips:
1) You do not get all of the TIE Fighter Pilots or X-Wing Pilots possible with just the core set. So in order to get key pilots like Howlrunner (TIE Fighter) or Wedge (X-Wing) you need to buy the Tie Fighter and X-Wing Expansions.
2) If you will be playing with newer players like yourself, a second starter set can not hurt. It gives you a second set of rocks, damage deck, more dice, and more templates.
3) After that the sky is the limit. But ships that you like, have fun!
Interceptors and Firesprays make a great hammer and anvil. Soontir Fel with Push the Limit, Krassix Trelix with Heavy Laser Cannon and two Academy Pilots for blocking, for example, gives you firepower, hit points and mobility, as well as five extra points for upgrades (Targeting Computer and Recon Specialist, maybe?).
Once Scum is out you can try something similar with, say, a Firespray, a Star Viper and two Headhunters. The Viper also gets you Autothrusters, which are great for your Interceptors.
If I were starting out today I would want 1 lambda, 1 Firespray, 1 Defender, 1 interceptor and 2 Tie Fighters as a base to work with.
Thanks for all the advice. I will be playing with people that have multiple sets and expirence. As of now I can only get my hands on a starter, imp aces, and a phantom, without spending 50 or 60 bucks on ships that are waiting to be reprinted. The main person I play with right now has multiples of most of the ships and he only plays rebels so he is letting me use most of his imp ships until I can get my own copies. Ive come up with a few list around the interceptors and a couple with fighters as the focus. Right now im mainly doing swarms, though I do plan to make a list with an imp firespray and 2 ints, or 1 int and 1 named tie.
If you can, a great swarm I've had good results with is.
Howlrunner
3 alpha interceptors
2 academy ties
leaves 4 points for flavour (i've been using determination and hull upgrade on howl, but the choice is yours).
Fel is without a doubt the most fun Interceptor pilot to fly, in my opinion, so If I have a spare 30-36 points I fit him in.
If you like imps then get a firespray for sure, get some tie advanced before they sell out, tie phantoms and tie defenders are both fun.
Another large ship to consider is the decimator the empire's new turret ship.
Im having a lot of fun plaing about with Turr and PTL
I will be getting a firespray when I can find one for under 50 bucks, and next time I see an advance ill be sure to pick one up.
Edited by darthmortiThere is supposed to be a restock incoming but it's overdue, I'd advise waiting rather than paying over the odds.
If your in merica I hear Barnes and noble have good supplies, otherwise grab stuff when and where you can you never know when things will sell out.
That's a great idea, I will have to stop by BnN in the next few days
The most important piece of advice:
Know what your budget is, and then try not to go over it by too much. Because you will go over it.
Yeah it's no where near as bad as a GW game but it'll dent your wallet even if it's Ray shielded.
Yeah I hear that, I am trying to get rid of my Necron army that I bought and never built.
Hold on to it the new codex is due after crimbo May get a higher price then.
Not a bad idea, Im just running into the problem that its hard to sell open but unbuild armies. or im just doing it wrong.
well alot of people who buy of ebay my friends included are lazy and are looking for pre painted minis so they dont have to bother.

If you use B&N, sign up for their email list. They send out 20-30% off coupons like candy, even if you're not a member. They work on everything from the TIE Fighter to the CR90, so you can save a lot of money that way.

Like the others, I advise you to play what you like, and really learn how to fly those ships. It sounds like you're already specializing in interceptors.
Also, if your budget is limited, you might do well getting just one faction for right now, and right now your best bet is Empire, but if you do have a passion for Scum, you're going to have to be patient 'till 'the boat' arrives, and the goods get distributed. Amazon will be good for purchases under $100, but after that Miniatures Market seems to be the cheaper bet.
If budget is not a concern, through your Friendly Local Gaming Store some love (and money), and see if you can't find people outside your normal group to play with there. Getting a diversity of insight about the game by playing with a wider circle of people is a good thing.
Totally Ninja'd here, but still, play with what you like!
Don't care about the word meta, or what others think is the best thing to build.
If you have limited resources or a limited supply of miniatures, choose a faction or get enough of each to have some variation for each faction. You can slowly expand into the type of fighters and style of play you enjoy. It is how we all got drawn in I guess ;-)
Welcome to the forum and have fun with the game!
