Fun Player created expansions

has anyone created their own rules to the game that they enjoy playing with?

for example, we play with a moving asteroid belt. we have a 4 sided die and we roll for the number of spaces it will move. we usually chose the direction of the asteroids in the beginning but it adds a fun flare to the game. once an asteroid falls off the map it just moves back to the opposite side and starts its path over.

what other things have you guys come up with?

I'm working on some advanced terrain rules but a couple of family emergencies have kept me from finishing them yet.

We've done X-Wing racing, which is super fun.

A while back we had a battle in a busy spacelane. We had lots of NPC large-based and huge ships moving across the battlefield, like Frogger. That was insane.

The spacelanes battle was played on a 3x6 board. I think it was a 2v2 game, 200 points per side. I was the fifth player. I controlled all of the "NPC" ships, which were any large-based and Huge ships we could muster (all kinds -- we had about 10 of them). There was a lane of ships moving left to right and another lane going right to left, lengthwise.

If one of my ships left the board, it would get placed in a new lane (randomly) the next turn and enter the play area. I picked all of the maneuvers for those ships, trying to avoid smashing into the players' ships, as a real pilot might. I had to choose the fastest possible maneuver, but could bank if necessary to avoid a collision -- still choosing the fastest bank available.

There were only a couple of collisions. If a player-controlled ship was struck it was immediately destroyed. My ships were immune to damage. As I recall, all of my ships activated after the players' ships.
