Tournament idea/concept

By Ebak, in X-Wing

Hey all! I will be helping my local organising an in house tournament just for the locals who come down every week for X-Wing.

I'm wanting to do something different with the tournament and was thinking something like this:

In the weeks building up to the tournament, everyone who is attending make a new pilot for a ship of their choice and decide the cost, pilot skill, ability, upgrades etc.

Everyone then votes on if the card is acceptable or overpowered or overvalued etc. The idea being that the other players will weed out overpowered cards and PS9 cards (with justification of course). The maker can then make adjustments until it meets the 'committee's approval.

In the tournament, in a round they may choose to field this ship, fully loaded with upgrades for free...an extra ship at no extra point cost. The catch is, if that ship is destroyed it is an automatic loss. So there is a risk VS reward element, yes you have one more ship on the board potentially firing off at your opponent...but it doesn't matter how many ships it takes out since if its destroyed, you lose.

What do people think about the idea? It does rely a lot on the people being trustworthy and not out to simply win by making an OP ship or a call that gives them an advantage. However the people in my local are very fair and kind individuals.

cool idea, but most new things seem overpowered at first anyways because they can come with a new mechanic that people don't know how to react to right away. As time goes on things that seem overpowered become balanced. and with only a few weeks of playtesting i feel like a lot of really good ideas will get shot down without enough extensive play

good luck in your tournament. sounds like it will be a blast

I like the idea of homebrewing some ships for a tournament. I would run it a little differently myself:

Have each player submit multiple pilots for your group to vote up or down, and have 2 rounds of submissions. Ideally, you would want to compile a list of the proposed ships, without identifying who made them up, and distribute it for voting.

That way people should be able to get a ship or two of their liking through the selection without going back and forth several times with a committee. It would also give players a little flexibility in picking their squad before the tournament, so your players would not know what everyone else will be bringing.

I would also change your free ship rule; as it is high-cost ships give a much greater advantage since they're free. I would instead simply require that each player include a ship that they designed in their tournament list. That would ensure that you see the homebrew pilots, without wreaking too much havoc with balance.

There's a lot of homebrew pilots on the internet. A pilot-building thread here went for quite some time before it ran out of steam.

Cool idea. But very difficult for new players.

I want to do a rebel vs imperial tournament, where it doesn't matter so much if you will or if you lose, but how your faction did.
