The A-Wing Swarm

By Lordtwann, in X-Wing

I've been having a lot of fun with this squad.

4x Prototype Pilots with CR

2x Green Squad with CR+PTL

Won a tournament yesterday, got second in another last week with this list. It's tough, but a lot of fun to play. It's a list that's possible now with the Chardaan Refit, and it's fantastic.

This is a list that lets you adjust quickly to opening ship placement and with care you can handle any opponent. Yesterday I completely dismantled two decimator lists, a fat Dash and three ship Rebel list, last week I wrecked a Whisper list with only two ships down.

Now I'm not here to brag. Just trying to lay down the A-Wing love. When you think about the ship a little differently and think about swarms VERY differently you can get some fantastic results.

Don't do it. They're irreparably broken. They need a swivel firing arc or systems upgrade slot to even stand a chance against the TIE Advanced. Ask 17% of the forum members here.

I am one of the forum members who think the A-Wing should have a rear arc. But not all of them just give us 1 or 2 unique pilots that can do it and I'm a happy player. But more on topic. I love the A-Wing and have been flying it competitively since store championships this year. I'll have to try this list out.

Sure I wouldn't mind seeing some new tricks added to A-WIngs, they've got some serious weaknesses. But they also have some huge strengths that I think balance them out. I'm now super excited for autothrusters, and I can't wait to give the new cards from wave 5 a try.

Let me know how you fare flying this one. The best advice I can give is don't fly it like a normal swarm, and don't be afraid to peel away the first couple turns. These ships have the dials and speed to easily adjust to your opponents placements. With care you will always control how the opening attacks lay out.

Tycho Celchu (26)
Outmaneuver (3)

Hell of a lot of fun will be flying more A wings from now on the 2 greens with Wingman taking away each others stress is great.

will have the video batrep up soon

Man, am I glad to see some A-Wing love. I've actually been considering your list for a time, op. While I'm hesitant to use prototypes because I'm not a great blocker, this does look like it has potential. I assume action denial is the key to success?

It's a big part of it yeah. The list seems at it's best when it functions like a swarm of bees. Working as a unit but not necessarily cohesively. The two attack dice stink yes, but you'd be amazed how often you can get a range one shots off, and more often then not on a ship that didn't get an action. Yes you won't be shooting with every ship every turn, but you'll make it very hard for your opponent to do the same.

It's not an easy list, I'll say that much, I still make mistakes quite a bit, but it's so much fun flying all those zippy A-wings. I really love this list. And it's a proven winner.

I really love this list. Simple and annoying for large ships.

I tend to fly my A-Wing swarm with:

GSP (19)

Refit (-2)

Test Pilot (0)

Push The Limitis (3)

(20)

x5

Swarming with A-Wings is insanely fun. I especially love getting into range 1 and Focus + TL'ing for all the shenanigans. They're also low enough PS that they can be used as blockers for Han and Decimators. It is down a ship because of the pilot skill and EPTs, but everything is on the same level so they'll either turn or burn together.

Could you post a bit about how you set them up and fly them? Do you deploy them all together or in multiple groups? Keep formation or just buzz around? What kind of asteroid placement do you go for?

I usually line them up evenly along the length of my side at a forty five degree angle, pointed towards the center. the four prototypes in the center, the greens on the outside.

I'm almost always setting most if not all of my ships first so with no clear favoritism to a side and no clear opening moves, this setup serves to really confuse the opponent. Because even though I set up first, the pressure of placement is completely on them. Whatever they do, I can easily adjust and move to a side to counter, engage or force them into the asteroids. I can split apart and do a pincer formation. Bring them all together to concentrate on a big ship. Scatter, whatever I want. I always end up controlling the opening flow. Whether I maintain that is up to me and how many errors I make.

I want to love the A-Wing more.. it's just SOOO hard with that 2 attack. That's what it always comes back to for me. That, and the lack of barrel roll. I always find myself wanting to fly the A-wing as an Interceptor.. And, it's just not, and I find that very hard to wrap my head around. Tycho is far more viable now with Aces, and The YT-2400. I have had a lot of fun running Tycho with Refit, Test Pilot, Push The Limit, Expert Handling, and Experimental Interface. It's just hard to justify the point cost compared to an Interceptor with PTL. 3 actions is nice, and provided he doesn't get one-shotted, Tycho is a great end game piece able to harass your opponent, but 2 attack dice is just so lacking.. And at 32 points, he's a 3rd of your list. Give me a Royal Guard with PTL, Title, Hull Upgrade and Targetting computer for 2 points less any day. Same hitpoints, more damage output, and two points less?? Yes please!

I'm planning to go with something like this and see if I can make it work,

Green w/outmaneuver + refit.

3xPrototype w/refit.

Wedge w/Lone Wolf and EU.

Fair point, but

  1. 4 hull are not equivalent to 2 hull and 2 shields
  2. Tycho is a named pilot with skill level 8, so it's not exactly apples to apples (A-Wings don't have generics beyond skill level 3, so a good comparison to Royal Guards at skill level 6 isn't possible)
  3. That Tycho outfit is decent, but I like X Wing Nut's better for only 26 points. With Outmaneuver it accomplishes a near-equivalent of 3 attack dice.

I took this

Tycho Celchu (26)

Outmaneuver (3)

Chardaan Refit (-2)

Push the Limit (3)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

@AlexW:

Wedge flying with 4 wingmen is going to have a hard time finding space at range 3 or more from his teammates. Maybe as the game goes on, and he finds himself with fewer allies, Lone Wolf would come more into play.

But your Green + Outmanuver I'd set up more like a flanker, and that implies being away from other Rebels. So maybe move Lone Wolf over there?
