...But what about A-Wings?

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

Everyone is theorycrafting with Interceptors now that the Autothrusters have been released.
However, there is still another ship they can go on.

Consider the following:

Green Squadron Pilot

+ Expert Handling

+ Outmaneuver

+ Autothrusters

+ Chardaan Refit

+ A-Wing Test Pilot

.-={24}=-.

Here, Outmaneuver gives additional offense under the same condition that the Autothrusters provide defense. It also continues to nerf Fat Falcons.
Expert Handling provides greater arc-jumping to enable Outmaneuver and Autothrusters, when you need it.

Alternatively, you could use Push the Limit rather than Expert Handling, as Barabelstfw put forth in the "All Falcons must Die" thread. However, then you're relying purely on Boost and Mobility to ensure you're out of arc.

Similarly, what about the named pilots? It has beautiful synergy with Jake Farrel, for instance...

Awings are less exciting because they were already interesting again from rebel aces. Not to say that autothruster isn't another buff to them.

Still a two attack craft, recent upgrades have made them better but their still light on damage where it counts.

Plus a-wings haven't been facing turret ships most of the time no one's really complained about how badly they've been doing.

Plus rebels have more ships with turrets which is a huge buff for interceptors

Still a two attack craft, recent upgrades have made them better but their still light on damage where it counts.

Yup

I'd like to try Greens with Predator and Autothrusters, although.for the price of the thrusters you could just get a 5th Green Predator.

Give them time. Decimators are out now.

A pair of PTL Green Squads with Autothrusters might be a nice escort for a Falcon that wants to up its game against Outriders. The Falcon would need to go on a bit of a diet though (Paul Heaver's Falcon needs to cut 5 points to fit the two Greens).

The 2 attack is the clincher, that is really the thing that keeps A-wings from being the awesome craft they should be.

How are A-Wings not having to deal with turrets? Is it just because Rebels have more ships to choose from in the same point range that do better against turrets so we're seeing people just not flying A-Wings when there is the chance that they may need to fly against turrets?

How? Autothrusters (2) x 4 = 8 points.

As you can see with the refit this is practically a [0] point upgrade.

So forget A-wings what about the Tie Advanced? I mean they are X-wing miniatures too.

I'm guessing it's:

Green w/Chardaan + Predator + Autothrusters = 22 points.

You can fit 4 and have 12 points to spend (that's enough for PTL or Outmaneuver all around). Drop the Autothrusters and its a 20 point ship that can you can run five of.

Yup. Everyone here knows it. Thanks two their fantastically bad Firepower of TWO and actually unhelpful maneuverability of 'we thought boost without a barrel roll was cool but were completely wrong. Meh deal with it.' A wings are categorically nigh unplayable. They make reasonable blockers and mis-directors but can't even flank well. Poor things. I really wish that wasn't the case. Just tonight I was playing AAABB for lols and blocking practice and regretting every time I shot with them. Stupidly the best thing to come out of Reb Aces was Proton Rockets...on Darth Vader. Seriously that thing is getting obnoxious.

2 firepower would be acceptable if they had a rear firing arc. That alone would make the barrel roll not needed too, even though the A-Wing should be able to.

Honestly?

They screwed up the A-Wing really hard on several accounts. It is the ONE ship I would be 100% fine with a rule revise and a re-release of. Sure, we'd have to buy more but you know what? A-Wings are so broken, I doubt most of us would care.

Tie advance?

Seriously, the Tie advance is worse off in literally every regard aside from an extra point of hull...and barrel-roll. After playing Farrel, imo even Vader plays like a sub-optimal imitation when it comes to delivering prot-rockets

But yeah, 2 attack dice are just killer. Wish there was some way to reproduce the swift and deadly feel from the old video games like X-wing versus Tie-Fighter, maybe an opportunity for multiple attacks ala the Y-wing title

The TIE Advanced can be fixed via cards. The A-Wing? We already have two cards.

It just needs a rerelease.

My A-Wings perform just fine for me with a little Outmaneuver/Predator to increase their firepower. Seriously, you just have to assume they can't hold missiles and they're fine.

Question.

Tycho with PtL and Daredevil + Experimental Interface or With PtL and Outmanuver + Autothrusters?

I'm thinking Tycho still gets EI given his unique ability but every other A-wing goes with AT. Consensus?

2 Firepower didn't seem to stop players from using the TIE Fighter. or the Z-95 for that matter.

The issue is, those are extremely cheap.

This touches on what I'm actually worried about with Auto thrusters, the death of the 2 attack die ships.

It was why the Falcon was such a tough end game opponent, reliably avoiding 2 points of damage a turn. If you have to get into range 1 and be lucky on the attack roll and be lucky on the defense roll and assuming that you do 1 point of damage, it just means that there's no real incentive to take upgraded 2 attack die ships. Your only choices are lots or as meat shields for something with more punch.

Maybe that was the design philosophy from the start, so we'll see how it goes.

Gemmer is even more of a gnat you can't swat. Fun.

Shoot all A-wings!

Huzaa for the Empire!

Note: I am terrible with A-wings ;)

Tycho is a special case. I drove an opponent to exasperation with:

Tycho, Experimental Interface, Expose, Daredevil, Chardaan Refit, A-Wing Test Pilot. His pilot skill is good enough to dodge arcs with Boost and Daredevil and he packs 3 red dice with Target Lock. You can do about the same thing with Jake Farell, one stress marker does not hurt that much with enough green, but that's it. Other A-Wings are just good for blocking, but for that role the Z-95 is more cost efficient.

Proton Rockets are just as useless. With the opportunity cost the price is 5 points on a one-shot weapon for A-Wings. Which is sad, as the only ones, who could use it, Vader and the Defenders, don't need it.

That's because they are 12 points and are the most efficient fighters for their respective factions, your investing alot more into an a-wing.

When your paying 25-30 points you want more than two attack, x-wings and b-wings come in cheaper with better firepower as do shuttles tie defenders and interceptors.

It's fast and agile but not very killy and will pop fairly quickly when the inevitable green betrayal happens.
