hypothetical thematic mission ideas

By aleexei, in X-Wing

Hi, long time lurker first time poster

i was thinking about how cool it would be if FFG made mission packs, where you'd get a new mini or a repaint and a new mission. Doubt it'll happen, but if if did, these would be my top 3 and i thought it would be cool to hear what you guys would choose

1) Stealing the Suncrusher! This was a one man cone shaped maguffin, zero attack and infinite hull. One side would have the suncrusher and paltry escort, and try to fly off the board into the sun for jedi sacrifice/tyrannical empireyness, whilst the other would have a big ship that has to forceblock/dock with suncrusher to remove the pilot. Maybe as you get to the exit side you have to start rolling for heat damage.

2) Leah's boobytrapped xwing! From the Brian Wood comic, i might be remembering this wrong but i want an excuse for the black stealth x, Leia's just been rescued and her ship is rigged to blow when an overwhelming empire shows up. So the rebels must have least 2 x wings, and there'd be a bomb card you hide under one of their pilot cards. They postion their ships wherever they want on the table at the start. The rigged ship cant do red moves, can be targeted by rebels, has 1hp and is damaged by base contact. When it dies, make 5 dice attack on all ships within radius of 3. Goodbye tie swarm.

3) Yaughtzee Vunghg! Or however you spell their silly name, they could have a big blobby huge ship with crazy non tournament movement rules for jumping out of range. The weird psychic goo monster that powers them would work the same as energy distribution does now, but it could also have gravity well weapons that affect movement, or weird flying goo monsters that latch onto ships and cause constant damage. And someone could custom paint emo Han in his Allblack Falcon, with an automatic evade for all incoming calls from friends and family.

So what ship/scenario would you pick?

I think if you're going to have a hope in hell of seeing a scenario pack/set its going to be OT based first to test the water

It wont be some obscure eu story.

The EU is growing on me but consider the following

1. its all debatably non existant unless disney confirm it

2. its very hit and miss

3. The prevailing tone of the player base on here is that they dont really buy into it

4. Its not iconically star wars to launch a new aspect of a brand.

I'd expect to see 'theatre based' scenario packs, perhaps with repaints, rules and most likely ground/play mats.

so 'battle of yavin', trench map, campaign, turrets, possible repaint.

battle of endor, either a mat with a distant half completed death star (or perhaps the insides?), rules/missions, possible repaints. Another spin on endor could be a 'low moon orbit' map with a tree canopy base, imperial defences, bunkers/shields etc

Battle/escape from hoth, ice world in the distance map, repaint of the transport, some ion cannon tokens, tiny models or whatever.

I just cant see them doing a scenario based on a late (non galactic war) comic strip and certainly not one based around the vong as about 1 in 10 star wars fans seem to have heard of them and about 1 in 10 of them liked the idea.

(again going by the response on here which is disproportionately based around tournament gamers)

I'm a great fan of scenario/narrative play so I would love to see them embrace an idea like yours.. i just dont think it would work without OT/iconic imagery.

The whole game relies to a degree on the unititated star war fan walking into a games shop (or more importantly a super market in this case) and going 'wow x wings and tie fighters... wow the blockade runner, wow the falcon and buying the game on that strenghth

If the box had e wings versus defenders on the cover a *lot* of people would be going 'eh.. that looks like a star wars look a like game' or would show less interest. Likewise huge ships would have (perhaps already have) bombed if the opening huge ship was a 'lancer class' that perhaps one in 200 star wars fans have heard of...instead they went for the first thing we all saw back in the day racing across the screen... its iconic. The fact you never see one again after those first two minutes is forgotten by most people (yes i know there are a few in the background pics in some battles but you dont see one feature.. even nebulons get more 'screen time' really).

So 'yay' to scenario packs and repaint character ship.... but 'probably not' to EU stories.

Can see it happening for 'rebels' though if FFG have/get the licence.
