I'm a lazy person and assembling the ships is the most boring part of the game for me. Find the ship, find the base, find the peg*...Anyway, I'm buying a foam board (i think this is the name) to use to store my ships for transport. I want to cut the shapes in the formated of the assembled ship (and store them facing upwards). Any risk of damaging the miniature or its components this way?

I store my Interceptors, X-Wings, and Y-Wings, on the bases, but not on the pegs. I actually started this with my X's to protect the guns. I use Warhammer figure trays, and there has been no problem, so far.
For that kind of custom foam storage there is always the risk of some of the smaller, more fragile components breaking (I think of X-Wing cannons).
I'm extremely interested in storing my ships on their bases for many of the same reasons/concerns you have.

Not mine. I found it while lurking on the forums months ago....but it seems awesome.
I've started down this path via washer weights on my bases (after painting the undersides) and I'm to the point where I just need a container. I even have the flexible magnet stuff to put at the bottom of the container.
Ideally when all is said and done you could have a stand storage solution for all of your ships that cuts down your set up and tear down time.
all mine are on the bases with one peg, pilot token and number token cos I have 4 of most every ships I can keep the pilots tokens i need on the bases for the lists im flying at the moment so i can grab and go. With the ship I keep a bag of the tokens that ship need for a game so i dont need to find the right number of tokens of matching target lock tokens i find it saves a lot of time

I have found that having the ships on the bases/pegs takes up too much space for storage. What I have been doing is cutting a space for the ship and then a space for the base/ peg right next to it. It allows a little more room to fit things in tight and it is almost as easy if you are pulling the ship and base out at the same time. You have to take the ship off the base in order to change the base insert anyway.
KR Multicase is your way to go, they are awesome!!! You can store all your small ships on their bases. It is soooo easy to deploy your fleet once you decide who is gonna fly.

It does take up more room, but I believe it would be well worth it. You do have to take the ship off to swap the pilots, but what I like about having everything on the base is organization and simplicity. I'm not digging through a mini cubby or a plastic bag for pegs and assembling/disassembling pieces after playing each game. My ultimate goal is to be able to get a game in with coworkers during the lunch hour, so I'll take any streamlining I can get (this goes into the realm of organizing upgrade/pilot cards as well, which I've already done).

The fit is tight enough to keep the ships in place by their bases. A lid with a matching pair of baselocks could be done but I'm quite happy with a simple sleeve around the tray. Same could be made out of foamcore. The design works also for rebel ships, y-wings and hwks have to be positioned sideways. Haven't tried with mixed rebel/imperial because of the added possible combinations (already tie fighters and defenders dont go together) and it just doesnt feel right storing them in the same box.

I store mine lined up on a shelf. I pack them up when I go play, and put them back straight after.

Yes, I was bored once and started to play with gimp. There are also stickers in the bottom of the slots so you dont have to check the lid all the time.
I store everything in an extralarge double sided plano case. The lid has it's own small compartments that fit the ship base cards and maneuver templates perfectly. On the inside there are spaces for the ships and dials, even a space large enough to fit 2 falcons. I keep multiple ships in each slot except for the X-wings. I have them on a plastic base, no pegs, facing nose upwards. As the box is moved and turn around the laser cannons never make contact with anything because the base or the ships nose stop any other movements. I swing the case around a lot and have never had any problems with bent/broken/busted pieces.

Sorry for the confusion, this storage solution isn't actually mine. I found it months ago when I was lurking around on the forums. It's made my someone named RDT2...unfortunately I'm not sure who that is here on the forums (if it IS someone).
However, after seeing this, it has become my target goal. I don't plan on having nearly that many ships (yet), but I would love to have something that is scalable where I can store ships on the stands. Maybe one day I'll get some acrylic tokens or templates.

If you want to store things on pegs and you want cheap, go for the Plano cases. I store almost all my ships on pegs. I think the Y-wing doesn't fit. Oh, and the big ships. Otherwise everything fits in a Plano case.
The only reason I think foam is better is if you fly or do serious travel with your minis. For my commute to the game store and back, the Plano is more than fine.

I store mine on the bases as well. I guess I am worried about wearing out the sockets on my ships or something, and I have at least 4 of all the small base ones, So I can usually just grab the one I want without changing cardboard bases. I store mine in a deep plano tray. It's like the others but double deep, and the ships can stand up fine on one peg, except for B-wings. The cells in this tray are just the right size to hold the ships without much room to move around. works for me so far, have been using it about a year. no damage to any of my ships
