Proton Bombs and Shields

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

My question is, does the Proton bomb bypass shields and give unavoidable crits?

Card Reads;

“When you reveal your maneuver dial, you may discard this card to drop 1 proton bomb token.

This token detonates at the end of the Activation phase.

Proton Bomb Token: When this bomb token detonates, deal 1 faceup Damage card to each ship at Range 1 of the token. Then discard this token.”

Yes, thats why it costs 5 points.

Notice it says "deal a face up damage card" and not "deal 1 [crit explodey] damage". Dealing damage goes to shields first, but dealing an actual card skips that whole checking for shields thing.

That said, it's not unavoidable. Anything that triggers on receiving a face-up damage card will activate. For example Chewy will flip it face down and Determination may discard it.

Guys, last night I caught four of my opponent's Rebel ships (it was a 150pnt casual tournament game) in a Proton bomb blast radius.

Hoho, that was fun!!

I got one of my own bombers as well, but you won't hear me crying over that.

I just wish I could put the title 'Collateral Bastard' over my avatar.

Thanks!!

Is it possible to lose all your hull and still have shields?

Yes from a double damage critical on an A or E wing is most common.

Would that destroy the ship?

Would that destroy the ship?

Yes. Once a ships is reduced to 0 hull no mater how many shields it has it is destroyed and removed from the game.

So all 2 hull ships are vulnerable to getting one shot by proton bombs. Those that will include

  • A-wing
  • E-wing
  • Z-95 Headhunter
  • Tie Phantom
  • *MA-3 Skyk (When released.)

The problem is that it is very hard to get a proton bomb into position. Most ships make sure to stand off a distance if they know someone is carrying bombs. Also proton bombs are expensive. 2 bombs cost 10 points that is almost a Academy pilot. And there is no guarantee that you will be able to kill a 3-4 hull ship with 2. What it is good at is more of a control option by hopefully placing a critical hit early on a Shuttle or Han that does something like restrict its maneuver with damage thrusters or remove an HLC from a Defender or outrider title. Normally people don't have to worry about critical damage until they lose their last shield token. Also the sooner a permanent critical damage can be placed on a ship the more of an impact it will have on a game rather than placing a critical damage on a ship that is down to 1 health and will likely die the next turn.

It's covered in the FAQS, difference between suffering and being dealt damage. Suffer is treated normally (shields then hull) deal is straight on to hull.

Had a proton bomb take out an x, double damage crit a B (with full shields) and injured pilot crit on wedge...I was not amused!

You must be the "Collateral Bastard" he meant.., hahaha

I don't always bomb, but when I do, I make sure EVERYONE gets one.
