X-wing+Imperial Assault=Battlestar Galactica?

By Stilgod, in X-Wing

A combination of Imperial Assault and X-Wing Minis is something many of us have dreamed of, despite how improbable it may be. I realized that the solution may be to use the Tantive IV as a "home base" for the Rebels in between missions, and allow the Imperial player the opportunity to pursue it after each mission. Each space scenario will be designed in such a way to allow the Rebel player a path of escape, but not before potentially sustaining damage or losing ships in the process.

TLDR version: After each Imperial Assault mission, the Imp player may attempt to force a ~50 point battle of X-wing Minis. The Rebel team gets to deploy the Tantive IV in addition to the ~50 squad they bring, but any damage done to the Tantive IV remains after the battle, and each Rebel ship that gets destroyed is destroyed permanently. The Imp gains additional Influence, and can drain some extra credits from the Rebel players. The Rebels can potentially gain additional XP to compensate.

Since I do not have IA in hand(yet), this was purely theory and brainstorming, but I think the concept has potential:

Dradis Contact:

After each mission, the Imperial Player may attempt to pursue the Rebel players into space. If the Imperial player is able to do so, all players engage in a skirmish using the X-Wing Miniature Game ruleset. The Imperial player rolls(TBD) and plays the corresponding scenario(actually, all this is TBD):

Pursuit(Imperials are placed behind Tantive IV)

Blockade( Imperial Star Destroyer Template placed on Imperial edge of Map)

Prior Knowledge(Play before a mission begins)

Lightspeed Drive Sabotage(additional turns before Tantive IV may jump to Lightspeed)

Break-off and Pursue!(do not deploy Tantive IV)

(Many more TBD)

(Most Scenarios will allow the Rebel Player to bring a squad of ~50 points along with the Tantive IV, while the Imperial player will have ~50 points)

(In most scenarios, the Tantive IV must attempt to flee off the table to the opposite deployment zone or survive long enough to plot a Lightspeed Jump. Jumping to Lightspeed will cost the Tantive IV an action and Energy)

-Damage sustained to the Tantive IV is not removed after a skirmish has ended, and remains until removed during the Upgrade phase at a cost of (TBD) Credits per facedown damage card and (TBD) Credits per faceup damage card

The Rebels:

The Rebel player's beginning Fleet consists of the Tantive IV and 1 Rookie Pilot(X-Wing)

-During the Upgrade phase, the Rebel team may purchase the following ships by spending credits(costs TBD)

-Z95 Headhunter

-YT-1300(Limit 1)

-X-Wing

-Y-wing

Rebel ships destroyed during a scenario are NOT replaced, and are removed from the Rebel Team's fleet. Damage to small and large-based ships is removed in between scenarios. Unique characters aboard ships not included as Heroes or Villains in an IA campaign(Han, Luke, Boba Fett, ect) that are destroyed during a space skirmish are removed permanently from the game.

-During the Upgrade Phase, the Rebel player may purchase the following ship upgrades using Credits

-(TBD)

After each mission, in addition to individual XP, Rebel team gains a number of Fleet XP which may be used to upgrade pilots or purchase additional Elite Pilot upgrades:

(TBD)

(Basically, this represents a "Rookie Pilot" gaining experience through battle and eventually becoming Wedge or Howlrunner)

Rebel Fleet XP is shared by all Rebel players. Characters included as Allies during the Campaign(Luke, Han, ect) may not be included in a fleet unless those Allies have been purchased during play or were included as Allies in the previous mission.

Imperial Overlord:

The Imperial Player's beginning Fleet consists of 2 Tie Fighters(Academy Pilots) and 1 Tie Bomber(Scimitar Squadron, equipped with Proton Torpedos x1):

-During the Upgrade phase, the Imperial team may spend Influence to purchase the following ships(costs TBD). All ships begin with the pilot of the lowest Pilot Skill, but their pilots may be upgraded at a later time using Influence:

-Tie Fighter

-Tie Bomber

-Lambda Shuttle(Limit 1)

-Tie Interceptor

Lambda Shuttle Special rule:

If the Lambda Shuttle ever overlaps the Tantive IV while the Tantive IV possess no Shield tokens, the Imperial player may choose to play the "Boarding Party" Forced Mission if he possess the card in his hand(This mission is a Skirmish using the Imperial Assault rules, think Darth Vader boarding the Tantive IV in A New Hope).

After each Skirmish, the Imperial Player gains additional Influence as described by the selected Scenario. During the Upgrade Phase, the Imperial player may spend Influence to upgrade pilots or purchase the following Elite Pilot upgrades:

(TBD)

The following additional Ship upgrade cards may be purchased using Influence:

(TBD)

Characters included as Villains during the Campaign(Darth Vader, IG-88, ect) may not be included in a fleet unless those Villains have been purchased during play or were used on the previous mission.

So say we all.

If the Tantive IV is ever destroyed, the Imperial player has won the Campaign!(TBD)

Please feel free to comment/critique.

Skip the rest, I just want BSG-wing.

Assault is more of an RPG style type combat game like decent. You need a GM to create the narrative and control the npcs for your selected heros to beat.

There is a vs mode but that requires you to have to select "weaken" heroes so that they can be properly balanced. It is like single player and multi-player, in single player most of the NPCs don't last long or as powerful as the player character. In multi-player where all of the npc characters are unlocked as avatars everyone is set for a more equal playing field.

X-wing is an "army building" table top game. Sure you can make up scenarios for a narraitive but there is no need for a GM to throw in plot twists and the # of hits on an X-wing remain mostly the same. There isn't a co-op Luke and a vs luke.

Because of these differences I find it hard to try and combined the two. The gaming systems are so different you might as well leave them in separate genres. It would be like trying to combine Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign just because they both deal with the Lovecraft games. One is a board game and the other is a dice game you just can't combine them.

If Fantasy flight could do it, a 100 boxed set, all inclusive battlestar galactica game using flightpath could be fun.

A similar thing for The Last Starfighter would be epic.

The 1300 and shuttle don't make a whole lot of sense in my opinion.
