Unique Ship Abilities

By GameError, in X-Wing

So, quite a few of the Star Wars fighters have unique abilities that aren't really reflected in their current incarnations. I had a few thoughts on how they could be incorporated, and was wondering if anyone had any other thoughts for specific ships, or ways to effectively house rule these into the game in a balanced way.

The first thing I thought was regarding A-Wings. While reading through the X-Wing books again, I noticed them mentioning the rotating guns of the A-Wing, something that is not represented in the ship in this game. I thought a neat way to incorporate this into the game would be a new action for the A-Wing. When they take this action (Rotating Blaster?) they are able to shoot at a ship outside their firing arc, but not IN their firing arc this turn. It could give the manueverable A-Wings a way to really dance circles around the opponent, but since it takes up an action and punishes bad guesses, it probably won't increase the A-Wing's firepower by an insurmountable amount. I'm not sure how many points something like this should take up, but I like the idea.

The other thought was the S-Foils of the X-wings. They're well known for their ability to go into a "fast" mode and an "attack" mode, but that's not shown in the game. I thought maybe something like Cloaking- where they spend an action to change their mode could be a good way to work it in. While the S-Foils are locked, the X-wing is able to perform a free boost action following their dial being revealed, at the cost of only rolling 2 attack dice, to represent the lower strength of the "fast" mode.

I would like to see some creative ideas like this to further differentiate the ships, and maybe address some of the balance issues in the game. Also, these would be kind of a lot of fun maybe.

The rotating guns on an A-wing would have to be a title, similar to BTL-A4 on a Y-wing. Logically it would only allow them a secondary firing arc to the rear in the fashion of Slave 1. That said, A-wings are some of the most maneuverable ships in the game and spending extra points to allow them this ability would seem to be less useful than spending them on something else.

Something in the same vein for X-Wings, a "S-Foil Aspect Change" upgrade card might be interesting, but it would be pretty much the same thing as Engine upgrade just with a drawback. Again, seems a bit unnecessary.

I have a house rule of strike foils on b-wings and x-wings that we use. Its actually pretty fun, before revealing the crafts dial perform a white 1 straight maneuver, then reveal. Firepower for primary weapons is reduced by 1. At the beginning of the end step you can decide if your in cruise position or in attack position.

We have found that in competitive games x&b wings start out in cruise mode for the first turn or two, exp the b-wings, and once they engage in furbal they don't change back to cruise unless they want to pull something unexpected or need to get back into the fight.

Once I was in cruise mode, winged and landed on an asteroid, then when I revealed my maneuver it overlapped the asteroid again. Hobbie ended up not having shields that game (asteroid took them both out :( ).
