TMB Article: Growing your Local X-Wing Community

By mightyspacepope, in X-Wing

It's a good write up.

Sadly I've been doing just that since June and still not taking off.

The store I play at is very small, so I think that us a deterrent to those who do play.

People are buying it, but just staying in their caves.

I've had demo nights, had new people play, but as I said the store is very small, and mtg is a huge thing here.

Thursday night is really the only night that is available, but there still usually people playing mtg, and couple playing neteunner

In fact this past Thursday I went in and the one guy I usually play with was just starting a rpg game and again not much room

So I decided not to stick around and check out this new store.

I can barely fit 2 boards on the tables.

However, I did find a new store which just opened, and talking to the owner he wants to do xwing Thursday night, but it's just as small as the other store, but not as cluttered.

Could fit 12 players which would be hard to do around this area.

I've traveled out of province for games, and will probably keep doing so.

Plus the guys in the other province are a great bunch.

Yeah, I can relate to a lot of what you're saying. My store is primarily CCG-focused. My strongest suggestion would be to try to advertise outside of your area (use meetup or local gaming Facebook group pages) to try to draw new people in. Despite the fact that the Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh players see us constantly and come over to watch games, we've only successfully converted one of them.

Hopefully, as you get new people, it'll have a snowball effect and the momentum will carry itself.

That's all great advice, but it still may not be enough to expect people to come to you or stumble across your social networking efforts. You might have to go to them.

Show up at some MeetUp groups focused on board games. Bring your X-Wing stuff and ask if anyone is interested in playing (demo the game for them). You may recruit some new players that way, but you might also discover that there are other X-Wing players who aren't aware that there's an effort to get organized.

I tried the Facebook thing for months but my local community didn't take off until I showed up at a board game MeetUp. One meeting was all it took. Six months later, my small town regularly has 10 to 12 players at our weekly game night, and several others who drop in occasionally.
