Beginner Imperial tournament list

so I'm new to x wing and was considering this as my imperial list

tie defender- Colonel Vessery with outmaneuver and an ion cannon

tie fighter- Howlrunner with swarm tactics

tie fighter- Academy pilot

tie bomber- Scimitar squadron pilot with advanced proton torpedoes and proton bombs

=100 points

the plan with this being that howlrunner would fly with the bomber, using swarm tactics,

tie defender would harass the flanks, tie bomber would get close then boom and zoom on out of there after dropping payload on a high value target and academy pilot will...well die.

any thoughts?

HowlRunner Traditionally wants 3 ships to fly with them. Vessery usually prefers a shuttle with ST321 to give him target locks.

It might do okay but it looks like you have only 9 attack dice before rerolls, also not much health. It'd be a surprise for someone. really depends what you have available to you.

I have NEVER ran Vessery with ST321, he will take anything that has a TL (FCS Phantom, another defender, bomber, advanced, shuttle, firespray, and decimator). Things with a lower PS then him are better for this, so the bomber is fine. I would suggest probably dropping the ordinance and the ion, not because they are bad but because generally less stuff on a beginner list is easy to manage. With those points I would toss in another bomber, would have to remove the swarm tactics as well, to help get the TLs out for vessery. Once you have a few floating around you could just start using focus and howlrunner's ability to get the most out of those bombers and TIE fighter.

Either of the two lists above are solid fun lists. Give it a try.

I would go with a double decimater list!! Just because they are so cool looking...

Maybe if you are just messing around to see what those ships can do but as a unit I'm definitely NOT a fan of it for a tournament. The problems as I see them:

Bomber: You've got an APT in there but that means you need to get into R1 with a TL on your target and take a Focus action to make that 6 points pay. Swarm Tactics may let it shoot earlier IF it can get the setup going but the problem will be getting this set up to begin with.

Defender: You're basically going to be ignoring Vessery's pilot ability but I will not argue too much about the upgrades.

Howlrunner: Probably not the best place for her and the Defender is likely to be out of position when it comes to get the reroll and that just leaves the Bomber's primary and the AP.

My "thought" is "what ships/expansions do you have available for use?" Assuming just the core, T/F, Defender, and Bomber I actually like Big's second squadron.

I'm not sure how well it would perform but this may be another set up to consider:

Rexler + Predator + Ion Cannon (I don't see anything from preventing his ability's use with an Ion attack)

Backstabber

Dark Curse

Scimitar + Ion Pulse + Proton Bomb (another chance to Ion something which will make it much easier to drop the bomb)

One could also reduce the Proton Bomb to a Seismic Charge and swap the two named TIE Fighter for three Academy Pilots.

i think I'm going to use ideas mainly from steveO's list since it looks kinda cool and still has that boom and zoom idea with the bomber.

so the new list is

Rexler Brath with outmaneuver + ion cannon

Dark Curse

Mauler Mithel

Scimitar squadron pilot with ion pulse missiles and proton bomb

the tournament is this Saturday so wish me luck!

i might post how i did afterwards maybe, assuming i don't completely bomb out.

I'm going to encourage you to use Backstabber instead of Mauler. It gives you two PS 6 ships with allows you some maneuvering freedom as you can pick how moves first and who shoots first. It also gives you a 1 point "bid" for initiative; if you get to pick you may want your opponent going first to make it easier to set up a TL with the Bomber or you may want to go first so you can shoot first.

You may also want to dig up some of the Predator vs. Outmaneuver threads. You may want the Defender to come in from a flank but considering how many points it consumes there is a very real chance that your opponent face it head on. Admittedly, Outmaneuver could shut down some C-3PO headaches but Predator is more consistent and with Rexler that dice modification may be important allowing him to hang on to a Focus to use to turn damage cards face up.

Back stabber

so I had my tournament on Saturday, it consisted of 3 rounds and I had a win, a lose and a lose,the win was a some what marginal one with me coming out 20 or so points on top. the first lose was almost a draw with 10 points difference, however the 2nd lose was an absolute flogging with every thing I had being blown out of the sky and I only having killed a red squadron x wing.I felt that the list did well but due to my terrible flying and a bucket load of tactical errors it didn't reach it full potential, but hey, it was my first tournament and basically my first game so im pretty happy. What i can say though is that those proton bombs are absolute formation wreckers, causing chaos and dismay in the ranks.

now with that being said, my new list for next month!

I enjoyed scimy and his proton bomb tricky so much i thought "hey if something is worth bringing, its worth bring two of"

now i want to keep the whole 'bomb them back into the stone age' but if you guys have so ideas on some better synergys let me know!

fun but imo too much ordnance not enough ships.

id rather have prox mines on the bombers. maybe one proton bomb, and one seismic on kath instead.

pack in another scimitar. no ion cannon.
