Random thought of the day: Ships with no forward arc.

By BahnCalamari, in X-Wing

Are there ships in the Star Wars universe that would have the capability for shooting but NOT out of front facing arcs? Similar to how a pirate ship with only side canons would do battle.

If FFG were to produce ships like this, how do you think they would be received by the community?

I'd be interested in seeing how a ship with two side arcs would play.

ATR-6....

Rules: The game is fully prepared for that. Print side firing arcs on the ship tokens. Change the locations of stats and actions if necessary.

Fun: I guess side firing arcs result in a new gaming experience. Which is good.

Kavil is kinda like this.

On a large Scale, the Mon Cal Ships were a lot like this

They had Turbo Lasers all over, but only a small amount were pointed directly forward.

This is the reason the Victory & Imperial Class Star Destroyers were wedge shaped, they could preset a LOT more batteries at a time.

At Fighter, or even Large ship scale, I can't really understand the viability of it. Although, there is a Scum Pilot of a Y Wing that has a bonus when not firing in his arc.

there is an argument for a ship to only have a rear arc firing weapon, but only in civilian craft I'd think... as a protection when being chased.

I dont know any on the fighter scale, but I love it as a game mechanic. It would have to do some pretty tricky movement, but I like the unorthadox approach to attacking. :3

I was thinking of something along these lines a while ago when I was looking at the template for the Senator's Shuttle from the starter set. If you don't recall it is rectangular in design. I played a couple scenario's where it had replaced crew compartments with side facing batteries. Really enjoyed the game and made a really interesting movement for chasing with Tie fighters trying to stay in the rear arc as it keeps turning dramatically.

This would be a nice mechanic to introduce into the S&V faction in the not too distant future. Make it similar to the Tantive IV, even going so far as to give it two weaker attacks (maybe 2 red dice), one out of each arc instead of one powerful shot. To balance things I considered making the second shot an action. This would account for the split of crew focus, and create a way for your opponent to do something to stop it. As well as creating some balance for the damage those dice could do.

Also I think that a ship with the ability to fire once out of two arcs would create a very interesting design niche. This would make it very useful in the early game with a target rich environment, but a great hindrance later against a single wily foe. A reverse of sorts of the Falcon that can struggle early, but then gets stronger the less opposing ships there are.

If you really think about actual space combat though... wouldn't you want maximum maneuverability by having 6 sides of position changing rockets on the sides of a perfectly spherical ship?

Hmm. Though, itd probably have to be robot controlled with all the jerking and high Gs.

The CR-90 Corelian Corvette while it has a 360 turret it's firing arcs are facing to the sides.

A small ship with side only firing arcs needs to be fast and maneuverable with a barrel roll.

Isnt the Tantive already doing this?

Yes and no. The primary weapon is 3600, it's only the hardpoints which throw broadsides.

The primary weapon's actually technically just over 2700 though. Nice nod to the X-wing games there.

Strap an Ion engine to a 19th Century ship of the Line.
