tournament legal play mats?

By Hidatom, in X-Wing

I did a little searching in the forum for recomendations for legal star field mats and was not able find a clear answer.

so...what are legal mats I can use? I have a "banneronthecheap" mat that is 36X36 with an extra white border around 1" around it.

I am slo looking at this:http://www.miniaturemarket.com/catalog/product/view/id/40214/s/hcd96680/

is this mat from HCD legal for tournament play?

You can't bring a mat to play on for tournaments. Here's the the section from the tournament rules.

Players cannot bring their own playmats to play on instead of the play surfaces provided by the TO.

You can bring them. It's just up to the TO if they're going to be used, and you can't reserve a specific mat for your exclusive usage.

makes sense

thank you for the clarification

Like others said, be TO call.

I would only allow it so long as there is enough for everyone to use, and I'd want them to be all the same make and style

But you couldn't just bring in one for you to use

My local venue has really slick tables, so they're usually more than happy to use as many mats as players bring in. As long as they're 3x3, they don't worry if it matches.

back to my point...the linked playmat...is it legal size? I asked because I have heard one of the manufacturers play mats is ~1/4-1/2 inch too small.

The description on MM clearly says it's less than 36"x36", so this sounds like a call for the TO.

Osoroshi pointed out to me that depending on the manufacturer, the mat can "shrink" after it has been printed / pressed. The mat that I have is within a 16th of an inch of 36"x36", but I got it from mygamemats.com, and he has stopped making them.

In tournaments the TO is required to inform the participants if the gaming area is different from the standard 36" x 36".

That HCD gaming mat is "legal" in my eyes as long as you tell the opponent that it is a fraction too small. If it is a problem you can always mark out an extension where the "legal" play area extends.

As long as the playfield is marked and both are on the same page it should be fine. If it isn't, just roll up the mat and play without it.

And you will not find "legal" gaming mats anywhere. That would require FFG to state that "these are the only legal play areas allowed".

Just as a sidenote that HCD one is VERY VERY VERY nice :)

Honestly, if my opponent knows their movements so well that a 1/4" difference in play area will actually impact them, I'd probably just concede, because that person is way, way better at flying than I am.

If my opponent knows all of their moves so well that 1/4" difference in the play area will impact them, I'll rub my hands with glee as they don't have the tactical flexibility to adapt when I throw a curve ball at them and do something to mess up thier movements (legally as in blocking etc, not "whoops I bumped" tanty)

Has any bought an applied perspective mat? They are vinyl and look very nice in the pictures
