Tycho or Jake in a 5 ship Rebel Build.

By jkl, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I am putting together a 5 ship Rebel build for an upcoming tournament this weekend but I am having a hard time choosing between Tycho and Jake.

Here is the current build.

Two Bandit Squadron Pilots - 24 points

Two Blue Squadron Pilots with Fire Control System - 48 points

Tycho - 28 points

Chaardan Refit (-2)

PTL (3)

VI (1)

A Wing Test Pilot (0)

Total 100 points

The idea is to have two Bandits for blocking, two Blue's for tankiness and red dice, and to have a PS 10 Tycho to flank and be able out PS Phantoms.

However, I have found that Tycho is not as maneuverable as I would like, which has led me to consider using Jake instead.

Jake - 26 points

Chaardan Refit (-2)

PTL (3)

VI (1)

A Wing Test Pilot (0)

So Jake is more maneuverable but his PS will only be 9. Against non Phantoms, I don't think the PS difference between Jake and Tycho will be that big a deal. But against a Phantom, I think it makes a big difference.

The other factor is that Jake, being two points cheaper, would let me do things such as change the two Bandits to Talas. Or change the two Fire Control Systems to Advanced Sensors. Or I can leave the two points unspent for an initiative bid.

I was also toying with the idea of swapping out either the two Bandits (or one of the Blues) for a Gold Squadron with Ion and using the two points saved by switching to Jake to add the stress bot R3-A2.

Thanks for any advice.

Honestly they're both very good options. Jake has one of the best action economies of the game while Tycho just sneers at stress. Here's the $20000 question though, do you think you can not telegraph Jake's movement when he's stressed? Sometimes you need that tight 1 turn and sometimes you really want that Koiogran turn. Tycho is wonderful for just simply being completely impossible to pin down sometimes while Jake suffers from a slightly different set of problems. Tycho also can't Barrel-roll while getting a Focus, but that is how it is.

I also propose another option for this build: drop VI on Jake and give him Outmaneuver instead.

I loved Jake when I was proxying him before the official release, but he hasn't been working for me lately. I still love him and think he's a great ship, but it always seems to come back around to the A-Wings lack of offensive bite. He's often the last man standing in my squad and is able to deke and dodge for a while, but his attacks can feel so pathetic that it's difficult to prevail.

With that in mind, I've been trying him with Protons lately. The only problem is that I'd sometimes like to be disciplined enough to save the Protons for the endgame, but he gets to his target so fast its always a temptation to fire them off early.

All that said, you could do:

Jake

PTL

VI

Protons

2x Blues

2x Bandits

And save 1 point for the Initiative bid against VI Whisper lists.

I recently played Jake against Whisper and although I could chase her all over the board, I was never able to punch through those four green dice. I will think about the Proton Rockets. Thanks for the suggestion.

Outmaneuver is crucial for A-wings to do good damage.

Prockets are good, but they are only a single extra die a single time at close range only. Outmanever can get you that same extra die multiple times. While it requires skillful play, Jake is one of the best arc dodgers out there, particularly if you give him PTL.

What? Prockets are two extra dice. 3 vs 5.

I love Outmaneuver on Jake. You basically get the PTL with his pilot ability so VI and make him a 9 with Outmaneuver. It's glorious fun. Killed off two defenders with him last night.

Jake is one of the easiest guys out there to use Outmaneuver with, so I was counting a 4th die from that. Notable that not only can you use Outmaneuver more than once you can use it at any range.

What? Outmanuever does not give you an extra dice. It removes a defense dice, which is different thing all together.

Outmaneuver doesn't give you a die, it drops your opponent's agility.

Both are solid but I always feel Jake needs Outmanuver and Tycho just doesn't give a **** so that's kinda fun all by himself. Some games Jake is a better interceptor, sometimes he's just an awing. And again, Tycho doesn't give a ****.

I'd say take 2 prototypes.
