Should I buy 2 starter sets?

By steambucky, in X-Wing

Hello all,

I have played x-wing with a mates set and I am about to buy my own. ( really like the game ) Should I just buy 2 starter sets? Is that the cheapest way to get 6 ships? I can see myself wanting 2 x-wings and 4 ties seem like good idea...

Thoughts?

Yes. Yes, entirely.

The fact that you get another set of dice, extra tokens and templates, and duplicate upgrade cards are reason enough to get two sets. You will almost always find a way to use the ships, as well.

yes..next question

It's financially cheaper if you do. Extra dice movement counters etc. But not as much fun as having lots of ship variety

Yes for the price you simply can't beat everything you get if you want to collect and fly both factions.

Also the extra templates, dice, ect.. are very handy.

One word of advice though, since it comes up from time to time. Do Not mix the damage decks together.

Yes, you should do this. Given what comes in the starter, it's actually cheaper than buying two TIE fighters, an X-Wing, and a set of dice. You'll still need to get the TIE Fighter and X-Wing expansions, but since you're just starting out two starters is a good way to begin.

Thanks for the advice people

My other alternative is basic set + rebel aces and imperial aces?

I know it's variety vs cost, but your thoughts are welcome. Do I need 4 ties?

Yeah, 4 TIEs are great. If you like Imperials, you'll eventually want 7 or 8.

Depends. Do you want to be able to play 4 TIE's at once? If so, then yes. If not, then no.

I started with fourth so I can tell you if you want swarm or dice go with 2-3 starters

A lot of places online have them for 26-30 the price and seeing dice are about 10-15 it is a no brainer to buy 2-3 and sell the extra ships your not using

4 TIEs is probably a must for your backup miniswarm. You'll still want other ships eventually, but 2X core is a good start.

My advise to ANY new player is 2X core and at least 1 large ship as a start before branching out.

Without a doubt yes... you get double the ships, double the damage decks and templates, and can make much larger lists.

I always like to point out however that you will be short pilots for both the TIE Fighter and the X-Wing, most notably Wedge and Howlrunner. In order to get ALL of the pilots for both ships, I always recommend at least one expansion of each.

So your second purchase should be one of each of those, then the sky is the limit.

I bought two cores myself, but I've never used more than three of my TIE Fighters. Depends entirely on your preference, but having the extra dice, an extra 1 forward (for Boosting and for ship marking when moving through furballs), and a range ruler that I cut down to range 1 only are very nice to have. That said, it should be easy to find buyers for ships you don't care to have any more.

Ah yes, and the extra dice! I had forgotten that part as well!

yes, or even three.

Absolutely. I would recommend 2 cores, a tie expansion, and an X-Wing expansion. I was actually going to pick up a 3rd core set for economics, I wanted a 4th X-Wing, but then they released the Transport with an X-Wing and some awesome pilots so I got that instead.

I'm confused. I thought every time a headline posed a question, the answer was no. But this is a resounding yes. I love having 2 starter sets.

I lost some damage cards, and had backups. Extra movement templates for teaching friends, plenty of dice, it's all worth it!

Good call on bringing the extra 1 forward around with you, going to start doing that.

Thanks guys all your thoughts on this subject - I'm glad I asked! :)

Yes.

No.

I'm the minority here. I'm only buying one of everything. I was a bit dismayed when there was only one interceptor but then the aces came out.

It depends on budget and if you want to compete in tournaments. I fly casually, and with one of everything I have enough variety.

With most wanted and the aces packs FFG have shown that they will do repaints and rereleases with no double unique pilots. You could sell off the doubles, but with most people buying multiple starters, the chances of this is slim, leaving you with a number of useless cards. Spend the money on more expansions I say.

Normally I'd say buy 2 base sets, but the way things have been going with stock - i.e. it's propensity to be not-stock in a very short period of time - AND the immense awesomosity of Rebel and Imperial Aces - I say buy them now before they go out of stock and worry about a second base core set further down the line.

Core sets don't seem to suffer quite as badly from stock issues as the expansions so it's a safer bet

Yes, you are in the minority...lol

There is a fair point there in that if you are not playing this game competitively then that would change your focus on your purchases. My thoughts were from a competitive point of view.

My thoughts were from a competitive point of view.

Even then, there are only a few reasons why a 2nd core set isn't the best value.

You are only collecting 1 faction.

You have no use for 4 Ties and/or 2 X-Wings.

You don't need the extra dice.

You don't need to provide templates to anyone else.
