Measuring: Flying Too Casual?

By ghaerdon2, in X-Wing

I was under the impression that you could measure your barrell roll or boost. In fact, you aren't committed to that action until you've actually moved your piece.

Wrong. The moment you declare for example a boost to the left, you must perform that boost if you can. And you can't pre measure it. That's why when i teach newbyes, i don't let them pre-measure, they get bad habits.

What about a player placing the template down for a boost/barrel roll that he knows will bump and be denied? He has the right to do so, RAW, but it does allow him to see the template on the table for comparison's sake. Is that against RAI?

We treat measuring a barrel roll, boost or decloak as declaring it in that direction but beyond that fairly lenient.

Yes, an opponent can do that (it is covered in the FAQ). It is, however, a practice that could backfire one of those days ;)

In my country, all of us play by the super anal tournament rules, so everywhere you go, with whichever group of players, everyone's ruling is the same. Any uncertainties are quickly resolved via Facebook and/or SMS to more respected veteran players

Seeing how no one here but Frank or Alex actually know and can say what is RAI, then none of us should really be trying to claim RAI.

But X-Wing is much less picky about things like premeasuring and the like then 40k is, so anyone who is thinking in 40k terms is coming at it with the wrong mindset.

Hasn't the game had a couple different designers since it came out? So not even those two may actually know RAI for certain, they are just the ones who can have their deductions and call them "official".
