Is Imperial Aces still worth getting?

By gundamv, in X-Wing

I am wondering whether I should get Imperial Aces.

I already have a TIE Interceptor (regular) and don't use it much. Not really a big fan of arc-dodging, and in any event, I have Soontir Fel and the TIE Phantom if I want to do that. I also already have Push the Limit from A-Wing expansion.

I don't have Hull Upgrade, Opportunist, or Targeting Computer. I understand those are Imperial Aces exclusives. Whether they will remain exclusive, I don't know.

I am not big on the fluff. No idea who Carnor Jax is or what his significance is.

Given that, should I still get Imperial Aces?

You could conceivably wait for SV to get hull upgrades and ptl.

But really they're fun ships and good cards. I think you should get it.

Also tie interceptors are fun after you've actually tried them.

2 Interceptors with PTL and Hull Upgrade. Plus Targeting computer which is only good for imperials. It is a perfect build your own Tie Interceptor kit with parts that can be used for other imperial ships. Hmm Black Squadron +PTL + Engine Upgrade?

Definitely worth (bibs) getting. Carnor prevents enemies from spending AND performing evade AND focus tokens/actions. Interesting pilots, nice upgrades and titles.

A new mission as well even though I expect people don't play them much.

You should have atleast 1of every expansion pack that way you have all the upgrade cards.then plan out your fleets from there.

Yes you should get imp aces.

The interceptor is a great ship. Give it a proper chance and you will see that for yourself. On its day an interceptor flown by someone who knows them inside and out will be untouchable.

Plus the pilots in Imp aces are really good.

I've had fun with this list lately:

Carnor Jax

Howlrunner + swarm tactics

3x Alpha squadron pilot

The idea was to create an Interceptor swarm. :)

It may not be creme de la creme, but it sure is fun. After initial joust you switch to flank mode easily with those who survive.

I also had a variant with carnor jax tankified with shield upgrade and hull upgrade with a royal guard title.

Hmmm if you dont play the interceptor, dont care about the upgrades and really dont care about the pilots, than the answer is easy I think, no of course. If there is any doubt to any of these points, than get it.

I also plan to get 1 of each expansion. So in that context I would say yes. However if your time and budget are limited then stick to what you want to play. Imp Aces is great but there is nothing in there that is "must have" unless you already enjoy your TIE Interceptors.

Oh yeah. In my own enthusiasm I kinda missed the point of your question.

You don't "need" it. It has no upgrade cards (yet) that are absolutely considered auto-include. It has no pilots that are absolutely necessary for interceptors. And if you are not a fan of arc-dodging it probably won't give you the same enjoyment for your preferred playstyle.

But if you want to try something different and aren't pressed for budget... ;)

Yes so you can fly this

Soontir Fel (27)
Push the Limit (3)

Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)

"Echo" (30)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Recon Specialist (3)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Total: 99

Lost to this list yesterday in a tournament we were the top 2 Jax stoping the ability to focus in nasty

I don't have Hull Upgrade, Opportunist, or Targeting Computer. I understand those are Imperial Aces exclusives.

Royal Guard Pilot and the Royal Guard TIE upgrade are also in Aces.

The different paint jobs are awesome. I'd get it just for that.

I'd bet there is a good chance to see all upgrades again in future releases, so if you dont like the ships, there is always the option to wait...

That said, at least two interceptors should be in everyones storage case!

I'd say yeah there are some good upgrades and unique pilots, and the guard pilots are really cost effective generics.

The short answer is yes - eventually

whether you decide to buy it right now is a little more complicated and subjective.

what's in your collection so far?

what are you looking for in your collection? - Swarms of sameys or lots of different ships ?

are you mainly an imperial player?

what is the stock availability like for alternative expansions where you live?

For example if you aren't sold on squints, are mainly an imperial player, you're looking to add a little more variety, you don't have a Firespray, and your LGS has one - then buy a Firespray. If you'd like 2 small ships rather than one big one, get a Defender and a TIE Advanced

As someone stated: worth it for the paint jobs alone.

Awesome expansion.

Wave six will hopefully see a resurgence for squints.

I'm a firm believer in "anything you haven't got is worth getting".

Except for space aids.

I'd say get it. It breathed new life into the Interceptor for me, and I LOVED the new pilots. They seem to be built offensively mostly, and I got a kick out of Carnor Jax.

Sad part is, Rebel Aces pack is so much better...

Only because we've had ImpAces so long we've forgotten what was in it. Prior to Wave 6 a lot of the basic upgrades were in there: it was an Imperial source of PTL back then which was otherwise an A-wing exclusive and Hull Upgrade isn't getting another release until the Scyk.

Carnor Jax is a great pilot, and the Royal guard TIE title is all but essential for high level tints.

Short answer

Yes

Yes, Royal Guard is worth the cost of the box and I think it's the best non-Uni pilot. The cost for the Royal guard 22 it has a PS 6 and the box comes with 2 of the cards. The model alt art work on the Intercepter is amazing and really does a red Barron feel to the sea of blue/gray. I really like slapping a Predator on mine or working a straight ps 6 list with them. Also match 2 guards with 2 basic shuttles and it's a lot to deal with.

You will fall in love with the Intercepter if held to close.
