Strategy Session 3: Decimator + Fel vs Knaves + Gold

By Sergovan, in X-Wing

You are flying 2 knaves (with Advanced Sensors) and a Gold with an Ion turret. The field looks like above. The top of the map is the board edge!

Here are your possible moves:

But your Gold has 2 hull left. You do have 2 Knaves squadrons with Advanced sensors.

You are facing Soontir with 2 hull and a Rear Admiral Chiraneau.

What are your moves? And why?

The moves the player picked:pic2292171_md.png

How did you compare?

It looks like I would have done the same except I picked 5 straight on Knave 1.

The reason is because with 2 hull ima going Soontir hunting. He's limited in what he can do on that corner. So I'm trying to put the most arc coverage from my knaves, and hoping I can ion the scumbag off the board.

So no shot with the y-wing, but my 2 e-wings would have had shots (looks like range 2 and a range 3). The Decimator has a range 2 chance on the y-wing, but all things considered, I'm ok with leaving it up to the dice.

Interesting post, thanks Serg.

I'm trying to get more strategy related posts. It is the one feature that doesn't get much discussion on the forums. Theorycrafting abounds but the actual put to use side and maneuvering can always be analyzed.

I would have done a 2 right turn with the Gold.

I would Adv Sen. TL then 4 strait with the Knave 1

I would Adv Sen. Focus 1 bank left with Knave 2.

The Gold turn makes perfect sense to block Fel since he is stressed and the majority of the Interceptor greens are on the 2 speed portion of the Dial. If Fel runs out and to the right, the Y will have a terrible shot, but it will be a shot without return fire from Fel. The Decimator surprised me a little by turning in towards Knave 1, but I feel by bumping Fel with K-1, I would not have been bumped by by the VT-49.

Knave 2 should now have shots on the Decimator but maybe not Fel. Though it could be through an asteroid. I just can't tell. Hopefully Fel is action less the next turn and is Vaped, allowing for runs on the big ship.

If I decide I want Fel, I Adv Sensor Barrel Roll K2, then go 1 straight to line up an easy shot. K1 banks 1 and takes TL on Fel. The Gold turns 2 right and takes a TL as well. This should give me 3 shots on Fel.

My first instincts were similar for the Gold and Knave 2, to cover both hard turn 2 options from Fel. I wasn't sure what to do with Knave 1, but what the player did there would have put Fel in arc if he did a bank 2 to the right. I think I would have just went for a straight 1 to keep my options open and hope for a shot at a token-less Fel.

So again, I'm thinking backwards, and mapped what the Imperial player would do in this situation first. This position/situation is definitely advantegeous for the Imperial player, I would do damage control in his shoes. That mean protecting the decimator as much as possible to get to a clear end game. Soontir on this move is unlikely to help, but a 2 hard-right and a possible boost will bring him in a better position for next turn, potentially getting a shot on a slow-moving E-wing as well. I would do a 2 hard right with the Decimator as well, and shoot at the Y-wing to finish it off. With the Decimator I would hope to bump at least one E-wing, which would get no other shot.

Opposed to the movements of your rebel, I think both the Deci and Soontir would not have bumped, but Soontir could boost past Knave, getting another evade and a focus with PtL (assuming PtL on Soontir :) ), which is still a high chance of Knave 1 not doing much damage to him.

With the rebels, I wouldn't take a shot at Soontir unless it's a good shot, I'd rather get good shots on the Decimator this turn, since it will 100% have to shoot the Gold to take it out. I would have Knave 1 do a 1 bank left and Knave 2 AS-focus then 2 hard left, which bumps him into Knave 1 with a good shot on the incoming Decimator. Gold 2 hard right, it seems the only move that blocks any of Soontir's shenanigans on that side. So in summary, ~6 damage on the Decimator in exchange for a Y-wing (it has about 18% chance of making it :( )

An alternative for the rebels is to go for Soontir (which I would not do when I'm already at a disadvantage, because it's always a big gamble and I usually just get in a worse position if I don't to any damage to him). For that, I would AS-focus with Knave1 and 3 straight, followed by an AS-focus and 2 hard left with Knave2 (which bumps into Knave1, leaving him a shot on the decimator. So that's a 3 dice focus shot on a Soontir and a 4-dice shot on the Decimator, which is a compromise. If he gets a shot on Soontir, should he take it? It will be through the asteroid, so 3 /w focus against 4.

BTW, 3 dice with focus on Soontir with no focus shot twice, from both Knaves, would have Soontir survive 1 times in 4. An asteroid on Knave2's shot? Suddenly Soontir makes it 1 times in 3! I would not waste dice on those odds when I have a clear 4-dice shot at the Decimator.

Thanks Sergovan for the puzzle.. Where's #2? I must have missed it.. But please put in higher resolution images and give us all the relevant loadout on each ship, as it makes a big difference in how you fly. 500x 386 is killing me...

Will put in larger images for session #4. Still a work in progress.
