A tournament report of my little Death Squad

By JustRob, in X-Wing

So the name needs some work but I posted up a while ago about a little four man squad. We moved around some points to improve it and I took it to a 13 man 4 round tournament. so here is my write up.

My Squad:

Soontir stealth and PTL

Turr Stealth and PTL

Howlrunner with Wing Man

Black Squadron with Wing man

Same tactic in Each match, keep the squad together and use PTL to turtle up the Interceptors

Round 1: Against a Triple Y wing List -Dutch with Torps, 2 Golds one with Torps all Ion cannons and a lone A wing

I managed to keep the squad together and reduced the A wing down 2 no hull in the first shots with no damage back. Next turn I ended up with my squad facing one of the Y wings with Torps. I took shots from Dutch and The other Y wing ut no damage. I managed to focus my fire onto to Torp Ywing and killed it in one turn.

Next turn I managed to damage a Y wing but Turr Got Ioned and Stressed and was pointing at an Asteriod.

The squad Split up in the next turn with one Tie sticking with one Interceptor. Turr took a damage form the asteriod. I killed Dutch leaving one y wing and a a wing left. No damage to any of my other ships. I killed the A wing shortly afterwards.

I got a fortunate Crit to remove the Y wings Ion cannon and form here it was a simple clean up as the Y wing pointed the wrong way.

Result 100-0 Victory

Round 2 I played the only other 100-0 winner which was a super Fat Chewwie with PTL with 2 Hawks for support with Auto Blasters Jan Ors in effect and some other goodies I forget. Chewwie had 2 Evades and a Focus every turn....

I lined up my squad and in the first shots I went Undamaged but the whole squad took a full Chewwie down by all shields and 3 hull in one turn. So I was feeling good. But i made the mistake of misjudging my movement and crashed turr and soontir. No actions. Soontir was one shot by Chewwie and Turr was one shot by a Hawk, in the same turn. Ouch. I feel this was a little bit unlucky but they shouldnt have been there, I should have cut and run and come back for another pass. Needless to say i lost from here but not before one of the most crazy thinsg I have seen happen occurred. My single Black Squadron had a range 1 shot on a hawk and rolled Hit Crit Crit. No evades. Direct hit Direct Hit Dead. Wow.

Loss 26-100

Round 3 Whisper Echo and Dark Curse

This was a list I worried about, Phantoms outmaneuvering my squad could cause me problems.

But in the end my opponent went for a joust with his 2 ships and echo close ont he flank against my four. We all ended up in range one of each other and really the game was decided here. I took shots from Whisper and Echo and no damage taken due to my focus evades and 4 D dice. But I took Echo down to 1 hull left and Killed Whisper outright. Howrunner was vital for the rerolls. So we K turned back and Soontir killed Echo before he could Cloak and my opponent conceeded here.

100-0 Victory No damage taken

Round 4 I played a friend running Han shoots first with Roark and an Ion Y wing.

Han ended up deployed on the far corner with the asteriods between us. I was able to focus down the Hawk and Y wing without taking any damage (Should have taken some). Then Han got stuck on an asteroid having crahed with Howlrunner. So I just crashed Howlrunner into Han every turn so han couldnt get away (too close to the board edge for a fast move) And i shot him down with the rest.

Result 100-0 Victory no damage taken

So my round 2 opponent went on to win the tournament to go 4-0 and I came in third with a 3-1 record and highest MOV. I dont know what the other final table players MOV was but I think he was given Second due to being on the top table in the final match.

If I played his list again I actually think I would stand a chance of winning against it. I would ignore Chewie to begin with and take our roark then the other hawk. They combo'ed well and I didnt play smart enough., well played to my opponent.

I was really pleased with how the list played and I know it caught a number of my opponents off guard at how hard to hit the interceptors were and how punishing the total output of my ships were.

Im looking at improving the list by dropping turr to a royal guard tie with PTL and stealth and bumping the black squadron to Mauler with Wingman.

It would increase my fire output at close range and also increase the overall pilot skill of the list, important for taking out the Low PS ordnance ships I'm seeing more and more of. Turrs ability is nice but I don't think it comes into effect enough when I fly the list the way it works best which is in a little tight packet focusing all firepower onto one ship at a time.

Most importantly now that I will fly this again, It needs a name!!!!

Royal pain lol

To have 3 out of 4 rounds where you didn't lose a ship, when no ship has more than 3 hit points, is EXTREMELY lucky, or else your opponents were pretty unskilled.

In light of your title: Mind-Killer

:D

I'd agree that I had some good fortune, no doubt. however I also feel that I flew the ships well in those games. In 2 games I didn't take a single damage point of damage and the other game only Turr took 2 hits and one of those to an asteroid!

Against the Phantoms I was quite lucky to not take any damage. However it would have been unfortunate to lose a ship in the first fly past with the number of tokens I had and 4 defense dice. Nobody targeted the regular Ties because Soontir and Turr pose the threat. But they are also the hardest to hit, so the little black sqaudron just got to make a few telling hit here and there.

Against my last opponent the fact that Han didnt shoot until both the y wing and the hawk were dead was because of deployment of ships. It took him too long to make it into the fight. Some good play on my part to drag the fight into taht location but a misplay by my opponent for sure, (as he said post game)
