OT: Movie 'prop spotting' in the original trilogy...

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Dont get me wrong i adore star wars but being a militaria collector and re-enactor I spot the 'donor' parts for star wars guns so easily (and some of them are *very* lazy)

Like stormtrooper E11 blaster are Sterling SMGs with a sight and some rails added.

Heavy blasters are mainly Mg34a

Hans DL44 is a Mauser C96 pistol

The sandtroopers 'concussion rifle' is a wwi/wwii lewis gun with no magazine fitted.

Rebel rifles are a hybrid of Mp44 parts with some AR15 parts (IIRC)

Anyone else spot the 'real world' weapons under the gubbins when they watch the movies

You missed the EE-3 (Fett's gun), I forget what type it is, but it is a flare gun with a scope and butt.

I always thought it was some sort of revolver with a stock fitted and long barrel added.

Oh and with clothing...

tusken raiders and jawas both wear wwi era leather bandoliers.

The usually jawa type is a a WWI '03' pattern cavalry bandolier whereas the cloth and leather tusken ones are WWI swedish bandoliers.

I bought both types for less than the cost of a small ship each in the early 90s but they go for silly money on ebay these days, usually over 10 times what i paid for mine.

Actually the reuse of real world equipment is one of the things that makes the Star Wars Universe look so "real". The Weapons used in star wars look real because they are real.

Luke's outfit on Tatooine is a simple Karate Gi.

But compare all this to Star Trek (Don't get me wrong I like the universe, but) hand held phasers look pretty lame, and don't get me started on what Star Trek people wear.

I know the cantina scene has a TON of reused costumes. Astronauts, werewolves, sea monsters, etc.

Apperently IG88s head is the drinks dispenser from the cantina scene

One of the aliens has a WWII british box respirator on.. we dont use these in re-enacting because the filters contain asbestos!

Even the characters are re-used .. Han Solo is the same dude from American Graffiti. ;)

I've always found star trek too 'clean' , even primitive races or those that are not exactly fashion conscious like klingons always look like their kit is brand new.

I think you'll find he was 'captain lucas' in 'apocalypse now' too :)

I've actually bought an airsoft metal replica C96 to turn into a DL44 but it looks like it would actually have been cheaper to buy a prop built DL44.....

Ok, Fett's gun is a Webley & Scott № 1 Mark "I" Flare Gun

Nice, i thought it was a webley revolver from the grip but never realised it was a flare gun

Is it me or does han look a bit like that Indiana Jones bloke ;)

The large gun the Sandtroopers have is a T-21 light repeating blaster, a world war one lewis gun. One of the other Sandies has an old German MG-15 (RT-97C in star wars), they were used as defensive weapons on German airplanes in world war II.

The Rebels A280 rifle is based off the M-16 and the DLT-20a is massive kit bash from a STG-44, FG-42 and an old 30 cal machine gun. I forget the characters name, but kenner called him prune face, the one alien endor rebel commando carried an old British Enfield rifle. The commandos also wore an old britsh paratrooper padded hat they added a "armored" donut to.

The E-11's in ROTJ was a mix of airsoft Sterling SMG's and special blank fireing Sterling's from Canada and Japan.

The electrobinocular that Luke and some rebel troops use on Hoth was a real world range finder.

I always thought that Han looked like a boring CIA intelligence analyst that might rise to the occasion if there were some clear and present danger involved.

And the way he treats poor Threepio, it's like he has some sort of running thing against synthetics.

I want to continue the joke by referencing 6 days 7 Nights .. but I fear FFG might remove the thread to preserve our wonderful memories of our beloved Mr. Solo.

Can't believe nobody's posted this yet:

It's a great site for cosplayers, because it tells you what guns, binoculars, rangefinders, etc. were used to make the props in Star Wars.

Luke's lightsaber in ANH was a modified 3-cell Graflex flashgun, part of a camera flash. Also his pants were bleached levis.

Wookieepedia says that IG-88 was made up of a bunch of airplane parts and his head was a Rolls Royce Derwent jet engine burner.

Qui-Gon's comlink in PM was a modified Gillette Sensor Excel ladies razor.

Great site although i'd dispute 'east german' boots were used by anyone. It was the height of the cold war and soviet and east german kit simply wasnt available as 'surplus'. It actually cost a small fortune as essentially it was 'enemy' uniform.

DDR/East German kit only became really cheap after the wall came down and Germany was re-unified.

Highly likely to be civvy riding boots and at best west german jackboots (which you could get easily enough)

I thought I was a proper geek before joining this site, I have a whole new perspective on it now

The hilt carried by David Prowse in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back was made from the flash attachment of a British 3-cell MPP Microflash, a flash tube attachment used on forties-era press cameras, with the ridged grip made by gluing portions of hard plastic 'T' track used for the sliding doors of display cabinets (often mistaken for wiper blades) onto the bare cylinder, and the switch plate fashioned from the LED display of a 1974 calculator.

I'll never looked at a lightsaber the same way again.

I could swear this was the same guy that broke Gary Oldman's neck and booted him off Air Force One. "Get off my plane!"
