That's one of the most memorable moments I have from X-Wing. And right from the first mission! :)

I was doing okay till i hit the first gunboat mission but i'm getting tagged by alot of missiles, modern games are way easier and it's dulled my once razor sharp gaming skills, i might after drop it down to normal...

But it makes me want a gunboat in X-wing all the more.

Do we know if there is or will be some mods to this game to increase the graphics?

Graphics don't matter if the core games still great.

The ease of modern games makes me very very sad. It seems to make games more mainstream they have to make them easier which deprives the intermediates of a challenge.

I think the issue was with alot of older games they never got finished and so they toned them down so they'd see all the content, but then they just kept making it easier.

My mates missus works in games design/programming for a software house.

She said about 90 per cent of their effort goes into the first few levels/hours as hardly any one bothers to finish games these days.

Its why games tend to feel a bit worn and repetetive towards the end or have lacklustre endings.

It's important to 'wow' people with the early levels.

**** rigth, too many games sacrifice gameplay for 'wow' graphics.

Remember 'elite'... that was all wire frame but had gameplay that kept you at it for months.

Not a mod, but the DOSBOX (1994 1993) versions look much nicer when you go to start menu and launch "Graphics Mode Setup" And select for example hq3x as Scaling Engine from the advanced tab.

This is why games are so f*cked up these days.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH.

I never had the chance to play the B-Wing and Imperial Pursuit missions out of X-Wing. Finally!

Though... how essential is a joystick needed to play? Only place you can find them nowadays is what, Frys? They're nearly extinct everywhere else. Would XBox USB controllers work just as well?

As i recall the mouse controls were fracking awful for x-wing, i own a joystick so i just used that for tie fighter.

Just order a joystick, man. They're not too pricey. I think I dropped 20-30 on mine. Only issue it's got is a weird little hiccup where it drifts to the left if I'm not careful but otherwise it's nice.

It seems the '93 original version plays with mouse and keyboard normally. no issues.

but the '98 versions only work with a joystick.

You get both when you buy it so you're free to try either. The new ones have better textures however. and seems to be more responsive to steering.

I finished all the games before with the mouse, because you kinda need it for accurate shooting. even if the mouse rolling and pitching causes you to continuously drag the mouse over and over.

Does anyone know if you can play the '98 versions with mouse/keyboard?

I am a bit sad - here's why...

There are basically three editions of TIE Fighter:

  1. The 1994 floppy disk version. It was great for its time. Resolution was 320x200.
  2. The 1995 Collectors CD-ROM. Included all bonus missions, voice in mission briefings and resolution was bumped to 640x480.
  3. The 1998 Collectors series edition. New 3D engine and CD-style music. By far the worst edition in my opinion because of the lack of iMuse music. I also didn't like the rough 3D graphics.

The GOG release only includes 1 and 3. Not the (in my opinion) superior 1995 edition. I know we are getting a lot but I am still not satisfied here.

Am I the only one?

I'm not. You might be dissatisfied with the '98 version, but that was my all time favorite game, and I loved every second of playing it.

I agree, Scurvy. the '95 version was the one I was hoping for. The iMuse music with the higher res and voiceovers made it the game I wanted. If they have worked in the textures to that version, it would have been primo perfect.

The 95 version works absolutely perfect in DOSbox, I've been playing it this year. Now the X-wing CD likes DOSBOX a lot less so.. yeah.

Important question to those who have the X-wing version: in the flight training missions - are the 6 bonus missions there? If so it's the '94 PCCD version, if not it's the '93 A:\

(Basically the question is do I use this or just go back to dosbox).

I got Tie fighter yesterday..

The old version of it has major graphical problems making it unplayable .

The NEWER version with CD quality audio runs flawlessly.

Well worth $10. Can't wait to DL xwing next...

Now... We can only hope and pray xwing alliance is released. Such a great game.

I've only tried the 98 version that worked right off the bat, my gpu usually hates low res games but it's behaving itself with tie fighter.

I heard about this site that does updates, but I'm not sure if it's do-able with this version. I'm not sure how the GOG game repackages it and if it lets you run with these mods.

That is only for the game X-wing Alliance.

Crap! Is there a mod out there for these games?
