I've been looking forward to getting more Proximity Mines for a while (only have 1) for nothing more than dropping multiples and changing the shape of the battlefield. With the FAQ update, I want them even more! I love when underused cards suddenly find more uses (like Expose on a Decimator). Nothing like variety to spice up the game, not to mention the wonderful visual of a formation of bombers (soon to include Y-Wings!) doing a pass on a large ship and hitting it with FOUR.
Proximity Mines Explored
One thought with regards to the new up Prox Mine rules however:
Prox Mines are now better at dropping directly onto the target than the conventional bomb types, which just seems wrong. Does this increase the likelihood of us getting ways of dropping bombs after movement? We do have "Genius" coming up for the S&V faction, but I'm hoping for something a little less suicidal (and that you can give to more than one ship), even if it is limited to dedicated bombers.

I think the point of "Genius" is that it's suicidal. Lore-wise, It's the sort of droid a crime boss gives to the minion whom he wishes to turn into cannon fodder, without that minion knowing that he's being sacrificed.

Aye, fluff-wise it works great for the scum. Unfortunately it the only way to drop bombs the way they're meant to be dropped: by flying over the target rather than patiently waiting for your target to fly where your bombs are.

I'd disagree with that in part. You can totally drop bombs (protons and seismics) where you want them to drop. You just have to have a high PS in order to do that with a degree of certainty. You should'a seen the face on my opponent when Jonus pooped a big fat seismic in the middle of his Rookie swarm at a tournament once. Classic!
But your point is taken. Normal bombs are better on high PS, whereas the new proximity is best for low PS pilots, and we should have easier access to more of them, to make bombers bombers.
Even with a high PS, your target will need to move to behind where your ship is starting the turn. The only difference is that you get to see for certain if the target has moved behind you before deciding whether to drop the bomb.
Now, there is a way I can see to get around this:
- Move to a point whereby the your bomb point (about 1 ship length behind your bomber) is about 2 ship lengths ahead of where your target is ending up this turn.
- Ionize the target.
- Giggle as you drop the bomb on your next turn. (If you've just ionized an entire swarm to move into the bomb area, you may upgrade to giggling manically.)
For this reason, I can see Gold + Ion Turret + Bomb Loadout + Bomb becoming a thing. It allows a single ship to control the whole process of shutting down a target's movement before dropping a bomb on the same target in the following turn.

Hm... there are a lot of steps to this. A lot can go wrong. For example, you can giggle slightly out of tune, which will offend the dice, who will then not allow you to ionize your target, who then escapes your well-laid plan.
You're right, but my opponents usually get offended if I try to sacrifice a small ewok to the dice gods mid-game v.v

That's their problem! You're playing X-Wing, not having a girl's make-believe tea party with pink lace. You've gotta do what you've gotta do to defeat them.
I've played the rite of spring by Stravinsky once through an entire game of xwing. Music nerd party haha.
It's about sacrificing a virgin to the pagan gods of spring in old Russia. The violent awakening of the land from under the ice. Cracking as it splits open.
You definitely won't like it the first time but give it a try putting it in the background as you play. Epic stuff.
Always a pleasure reading your threads, Sable. Very well put-together
I've always thought they were a bit underutilized.
One curious thing about Prox Mines: They like being put on ships with LOW pilot skill, whereas the rest of the bombs (and ordnance in general) prefer a high PS.
If your enemy moves before you place your Mines, your only hope is to land the mine on them; a bit tricky if you've no ability to modify your final position while maintaining your action.
However, if your enemy moves after you, there is a zone in front of the ship through which they MUST move, irrespective of what maneuver they have picked (barring Decloaking or Adv S. Barrel-rolls), so your zone of damage is much greater.
Also, you know the board-state when you move, so you won't lose your action, and can land the mines without guesswork.
I think the new plan is to fly your space butt up to a ship and drop the mine causing a mine explosion. This does favor low PS. I can see Yorr being particularly good for K turn drops.

I tried to set this up in Vassal with Bombers. The only problem I had was that Bombers had to be beside Yorr (on both sides), so they would both be in range 2 of him after the K-turn. This means they're further apart, so the end position of the two Proximity mines is not touching, so most of the times you have to settle for two different targets. Even so, it's very gimmicky and only works if you have lower PS than your opponent, if you have space for that 5-K and if you do enough damage so you don't worry that much about the brutal attack that might follow.
Probably not the best use... normal flight probably the best. Odd way of wanting to block too... going short so someone doesn't hop over you and lay a prox mine.
