NOVA Squadron Radio – Episode 9 “World Championship Prep w/Doug Kinney and Paul Heaver!”

By EvilEd209, in X-Wing

MJ, some builds are good, but the timing just isn't right for them. In this high PS war, Roak is getting noticed and can play a strong role now.

Yeah can't agree more. Nice to see you around. :)

P.S. Rebel Operative + Chewbacca + Ion Cannon Turret is 25 points vs a Gold + Ion at 23 points. 7 HP @ 2 agility is around 15-20% more durable than 8 HP at 1 agility. It's not the worst use of 2 points that I have ever seen, it's about on par with the Gold Ion Y-wing for overall points efficiency.

Super-swarm tactics for 3 more points however can be really good in the right meta. The brilliant thing about pairing it with 3 blues w/ FCS, is you have a really good chance that something will be shooting with TL+F at PS12.

Just started the episode, but I'm saving it for a 4 hour drive to South Carolina. Good timing, guys. I appreciate it.

I'm also happy to hear discussion on things that aren't Fat Hans or Phantoms. I'm tired of butting heads with people on these forums that think there is nothing in the world that can take them on.

It's a great episode. I think Paul's comment on the potential stratification of tournaments due to MoV is spot on. I had arm-chair theorized this and posted this on Team Covenant recently, but -- I haven't been to Regionals yet let alone Nationals or Worlds -- so it is nice to see someone with a little(edit #1) LOT more experience(edit #2) way more credentials than I will ever have, thinking along the same lines. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in tournaments and at Worlds. Ideally you would have enough rounds that MoV is less important, but unless you play dozens of rounds there will almost certainly be an MoV tie breaker somewhere. The game being so popular that it's hard to get enough rounds in is a nice problem to have, it means the community is healthy and growing.

I was thinking about this a little more last night, and realized that by pairing the highest MoVs against each other, it will potentially prevent the top players with 2-3 ship builds from "running away" with the best records / MoV. If the MoV spread is smaller at the top, then this should make it slightly easier for someone to "catch up" in the final rounds if they had a bad start. Which is a good thing. It certainly has its merits vs Hi-Lo MoV pairings.

Then the DARK PHOENIX shall rise and destroy all who oppose it!

That was one the most interesting piece of new information I think we covered in that show, the MoV Game and lists falling into mirror match offs.

This is why I was so excited to have Paul and Doug on the show. They both think about the game on a level I can only hope to understand, so a glimpse at what they are thinking about this big event was just a lot of fun to listen to. I am a fan of the game before I am a host of the show, so I was just having the best time that night, despite being sick, listening to them talk X-Wing!

I was a real privilege!

I found Paul's comments on the MoV pairing to be very interesting too. Canadian Nationals are this weekend, any chance you might do some math wizardry on the squads and their MoV. I'm curious if this stratification plays out.

I have already been in touch with the TO that will be running it, so I should get final results (hopefully with MoV). Getting data on a per-round basis is harder, but I'm emailing him now to ask what software he is planning on using. Maybe we can get the full results. That would be nice to have for the first big tournament with this new MoV sorting.

Edit: P.S. What I know about the tournament from my email with the TO:

Format is:

5 Rounds of Swiss - Cut to Top 8. To get it all in we are only going to do 60min rounds during Swiss.

Attendance looks to be about 60, although it's still in flux a bit as some last minute people drop and others buy in.

A quick preview:

We will be reviewing the results of the Canadian Nationals in our next show. A few NOVA Squadron members are making the drive up and I want to hear first hand what it was like.

Just a big shout out to cast member Ron Brannon for making the final table at the Canadian Nationals this weekend, can't wait to talk about it on the show this week!

Great podcast! I didn't follow it until now, but I will listen to the next episodes for sure!

The MoV discussion is quite interesting, it opens up situations where you can "game the system", but that's only in tournaments with a cut to topX. In local championships with only a short number of swiss rounds it makes for some very challenging tournament runs.

Yeah, Sean is really good for finding little loopholes like that. Overall the MoV system is far better then the old Strength of Schedule system, but it is not entirely perfect either.

Thanks for listening!
