Tetran Cowell + stay on target = ?

By iPeregrine, in X-Wing

Tetran Cowell: "when you reveal a k-turn you may treat the speed as 1, 3 or 5".

SOT: "when you reveal a maneuver you may rotate your dial to another maneuver of the same speed".

So let's say you put a 5-k on your dial. You reveal it, you can treat the speed as 3 and then use SOT to get a straight or turn or bank in either direction. Or you can treat the speed as 1 and use SOT to give you a turn in either direction. Or you can even keep it at speed 5 and do a straight. So, let's review: when you reveal your dial you can make a tight turn, a fast turn, a straight/bank, or a k-turn, all of them in any direction you want. I'd say this is a pretty good approximation of "ignore your dial, do whatever maneuver you want".

So, am I correct about how this works? Is this enough to make a pilot everyone thinks is weak into a viable option?

IF it works, id personally aim for a 4 Speed K-Turn which then allows you to switch to anything 1/3/4/5 though remember, you still need the movement on your dial to rotate to.

It depends on the order resolution and the wording.

Since the initial 'When you reveal' bit is identical im guessing you can choose which effect happens first so shouldnt be a problem, the question comes up when you consider 'You may treat as' isnt the same as 'is'. SOT effect may be strictly whats on the dial, and not what is being amended.

Interceptors don't have a 4-k, only a 3-k and 5-k.

Note that the ability says "treat it as {stuff}", not "treat it as {stuff} when executing that maneuver". So IMO as soon as you apply the ability you treat it as that speed for everything, ignoring the printed number on the dial entirely. So a 5-k turned into a 1-k would be a 1-speed maneuver even though there's a 5 on the dial.

Teach me to trust a quick google search cos im too lazy to get out my dials lol

I read it that way too.

Tetran is pretty clear about treating the K-Turn as speed 1, 3 or 5 and Stay on Target is also explicit about the speed.

There's also a precedent for multiple maneuver changing abilities applying in whatever order you want in the Fettigator.

I don't think it will be some meta breaking combo, but if it brings Tetran from never used to sometimes used then hey, all for it.

Yup, I had this thought, too, when the card came out. Might make Tetran slightly more common. Reveal any K-turn, or speed 1, 3, or 5 maneuver, and you have access to any speed 1, 3, or 5 maneuvers on your dial.

So Tetran could do a K-segnor-turn?... sweet ;)

only maneuvers on his dial. Point being, he can change his maneuver to more than half of his maneuver options contextually, which is no small thing.

Only every other turn, in all cases the changed maneuver is red.

I would agree that this works. Boba Fett + Navigator sets precedence.

I haven't had a chance to put it on the table yet, but Tetran with Stay on Target was the inspiration for this list.

Very interesting, I never thought of this! Thanks for sharing :)
