Ok. I needed a break from doing Trek ships and my Ghost/Falcon crossbreed is taking a while to hollow out so thought id try another ugly concept as a break (which is odd since im generally not a fan of such things)

This time a Y Wing with shortened engine struts and TIE panels added for use as a pretty high powered , by ugly standards, bomber. The ion turret would be limited by the panels but it would be a pretty fast ship id think with power to spare. At least, once again, by the standards of cobbled together pirate fighters.

It isnt finished yet but id like input as to whether it even should be *L*

Make an alternate picture with the solar panels a bit more angled. It might look better. It does look good. Also if you can see if you can find a picture with a Y-Wing from the movies that has a huge single barrel cannon turret. Swap it with the turret you have in this picture it will look awesome.

That thing is anything but ugly.

I think the imps need another howlrunner

I'm not crazy about the y-wing engines and defender panels together. I'd rather see it with just the defender parts attached to the struts.

Forgottenlore- I thought of that. This was originally going to be a variation on the TYE wing or Y-TIE, i can never remember which, But i have an issue with the lack of sufficient thrust. The tiny ion thrusters are enough for a light weight like the TIE but throw in a heavyweight hull like the Y Wing and they seem like they would be lacking. But i could do another as well easily enough with the Defender thrusters on the back and the Y engines removed.

I wouldn't go that far. I think the Howlrunner is just very very boring as far as starfighters go.

Have to say though, the whole concept of "uglies" is starting to grow on me. I may have to convert a few sometime.

Thats what makes it ugly for me, is the absolute lack of any interesting detail. It looks like a deodorant bar with simple wings, a completely unflattering windshield, and big, metallic, bug antennae.

Actually the sad thing is that the original Howlrunner design was just a slightly modified silhouette of the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter with some details added. Sort of like some of the early Battletech designs that were anime combat units from Macross and Dougram with assorted lines added. But i think it is a sound enough design if not thrilling which is why im trying to make one with a little more 'something'. There are certainly worse designs out there. The A-9 Vigilance Interceptor for example.

Would make for a great flying brick lol or a slippery piece of soap. Lol all jokes aside it could make for a great pirate/ most wanted ship.

I gotta say, that ship looks good. i usually don't like the uglies, or even the idea of the uglies, but that one looks good.

Ok. It is complete. I added plates with bolts as support for the panels, some miscellaneous conduits etc and enhanced the surface details. I was a bit iffy about it at first but will admit to have developed a liking for it now. Even though deep in my heart i still feel that the Y Wing is a perfect ship as it is and shouldnt be changed. Im also going to do a ball turret cannon version.

I wonder what it would look like if you threw on four X-Wing engines around were the hyperdrive is kept, two on top and bottom.

I think the diminished product looks great.

Looks pretty neat. I imagine that with the greatly shortened nacelles, it might have lost a lot of stability, but that could make it more maneuverable in the hands of a skilled pilot. Maybe similar to the B-wing dial.

I think it looks very cool, but the backseat engineer in me thinks won't the engines burn up the back of the solar panels?

I know what you mean but the actual thruster on the Y Wing is considerably smaller than the main cylinder so i was giving it the benefit of the doubt. That is what it looks like without the thruster vane assembly

The lack of stability was something that i thought about as potentially being an advantage with a pilot who knows how to handle it but im not sure how that would translate. That is the problem with coming from things with a rpg background *L*

As for the addition of X Wing thrusters that would be very groovy but wouldn't it be overkill? Or did you mean as a replacement for the Y Wing engines?

I think it depends on the pilot, If IM a loner and I end up facing something that hard to chew I might have a custom ship with built to rub fast if the need comes.

Artistically I just feel like theres to much open space between the panels and ship. Even if you don't add anything else it does still look cool.

But if you want to touch it up... just make it 20% cooler. =]
